Problems

Breaks ssl linking. Mediawiki will modify all WMF local and interwikis to the secure server(s) when parsing pages. This template hard-codes links to the insecure servers. - Amgine | ^t 04:09, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

interwikis don't stay on the secure server. There's a bug in bugzilla somewhere about it. There is a gadget that re-writes links to wikipedia to use the secure server you might be using (this template shouldn't affect that). This template could be modifed to use external links if we were really desperate that auto-adjusted based on {{SERVER}}, but i think interwikis are in general better. I'm certainly *not* using a gadget, but I am using https everywhere which will force me to secure server. But the interwikis on en.WN *do* show up for secure server, while those for the template do not, which is why I noticed this at all. - Amgine | ^t 04:32, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

That is interesting, because the template uses interwikis internally. The html produced should essentially be the same, with perhaps a span wrapping it. Bawolff ☺☻ 02:29, 28 February 2011 (UTC) (p.s. Not working with Main Page

I just noticed that articles which have the new {{w}} linked content are not displaying correctly on the Main Page. The linked content doesn't display, so instead of a line such as "Hendrick Motorsports driver Jeff Gordon, who qualified 20th, won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 2011 Subway Fresh Fit 500 held on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Arizona, United States." now appears as "driver, who qualified 20th, won the held on Sunday at in Arizona, United States." The problem can be approached in at least two ways:

• Make people aware that they shouldn't use the template on the lede early in the life of the article. Clearly the warning banner isn't working, and I doubt making it more prominent would do the trick either; this approach seems like trying to change human nature. People don't even notice that the text by Make lead is coming out garbled; it's akin to the way people put Wikipedia links on a page as if Wikipedia were a do-what-I-mean device, not checking the links to notice that the page doesn't exist, or is a disambig page, or is the wrong page. (A few days ago I found an archived article in which Tripoli, Lebanon was linked to w:Tripoli.)
• Modify Make lead so it handles {{w}} correctly. Sigh. I didn't mean to cause such a fuss; originally I'd devised {{w}} as a way of gradually turning the hopeless task of categorizing/local-linking our archives into a merely staggering task.

I've added a notice to WN:ML to remind people about this, as an interim measure. I don't think we should stop using this template — I was mistaken in adding {{w}} to the NASCAR article (it had been published for a couple of hours, I assumed it wasn't going on the Main Page, or that it already was). — μ 12:12, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
