- Neutral As per my recent comments, we need to clarify what we are trying to achieve here. Either we are deciding what images are good for "news in pictures" on the main page, in which case I'd suggest being bold and changing it, or discussing whether the community considers it to be a good example of photojournalism. The latter is not something which is going to happen instantly and certainly not in a time frame which is appropriate if we're using this as "news in pictures" so these are two distinct aims and so I think it is probably time to rename featured pictures to news in pictures and abandon this concept of having some process for deciding on "features pictures in the style that say Commons do. The level of activity of this page, where nominations of featured images is supposed to take place, provides an indication that what I suggest is probably wise when the number of "featured pictures" which have come and gone over time relative to the activity is considered. How to find free images
- Add your ideas here!
- Browse the latest articles on Wikinews to see if there are any OR articles or articles with great images.
- Flickr:
- Search free images for any of the following keywords: news, journalism, photojournalism, Indymedia, protest, festival, parade, sports, fire, weather, G8, Iraq, Bush, president, media, Palestine, ...
- Search for keywords of recent events: recent holidays, actions you know of,...
- Browse through some of these pools (problem is, most images are copyrighted, but you can ask the photographers): Photojournalism 2.0, Indymedia, Global Photojournalism, Hardcore Street Photography, social documentary photographers, Protests, Political Art, Democracy, Social Change, The Street Photography Collective, Flickr's 100 Best Photojournalism, Photojournalism, Photojournalism & Photojournalists, Documentary Photography, News_Photojournalism
- Browse through the articles at Wikipedia's Portal:Current events to see if any articles have recent pictures.

Discussions about this concept
2007 in images
This might serve to write an article on December 31 about the important events of the year, in pictures. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 17:25, 29 May 2007 (UTC)
- Good idea, lets us inadvertently plan ahead. -- Zanimum 19:07, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Wrapping
I've taken the wrapping off the image, it just didn't work well with it on. -- Zanimum 19:06, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
Above "this day"
Can we move this template so it's about the "This day in history..." section? This seems more relevant to readers than reflection on stories of the past. -- Zanimum 19:10, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- Also there is a better supply of pictures for the past. Bawolff ☺☻ 21:56, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- Okay, so we're also digging through past OR and the like for images? That's an idea. Presumably though a recent "just okay" image would take priority over a great old image? Like, the old images would only be used when we lack new? -- Zanimum 16:50, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- Bawolff, you were a little to short there: could you explain what you are saying? I think this should indeed be higher than the historical articles, I was thinking the same so I'm glad you agree Zanimum. I'll start another thread on which images to use, though.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 17:51, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- How about moving "News In Pictures" under the third lead. That way it will get more attention and more people will see it. I don't mind having it over the "This day in history section..." either. Just a thought. —FellowWikiNewsie 19:11, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- I would agree, once more people started helping out with the updating. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:08, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
Auto update
You said on the wc you need help with updates. Well I can code the template to automatically get the image from a subpage, and then at the specified time it will change to a new suppage (this can be done at any frequency, at any time, as long as it is at least semi-consistant (i.e. every day, every week, every 4 hours, every day on week days, but only one on the week-end (although that is slightly harder to do, but do-able) etc). Bawolff ☺☻ 22:13, 30 May 2007 (UTC)
- That sounds cool, but how would it know what to use as a caption? And would you be able to code it to only take free images, so that there wouldn't be logos on the front page? -- Zanimum 16:52, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- It is indeed not to difficult to have an automatically updating page, I've used the same on w:Portal:Medicine's selected picture. I need help with finding images, not so much with the template. Problem is if we set up an automatically updating one it appears with a redlink on the main page, so I would prefer one if this project has reached top speed. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 17:49, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
- Your right, we need content first before worrying about the template. If we did do that, the caption and image would be decided in advanced. (ie we choose all the pict for the next week at once, and it auto updates them). Bawolff ☺☻ 20:54, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
- Oh, I get it Steven. It would automatically replace itself at a set time, with one that the community has chosen. I was mistakenly under the impression that you meant the computer would choose randomly. I'd be in favour, but we probably shouldn't choose more than a few days at a time, in order to remain as timely as possible. -- Zanimum 17:54, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
main page placement
Another alternative for main page placement is to randomly make it change places with something else, like this day in history. Half the time you load the main page it'd be one, half the time it'd be another. Similar to the w:template:wikipedia ads on wikipedia, or the quote box on my userpage. Bawolff ☺☻ 23:04, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
- It's a theoretical advantage, but half the time (like now, for example), when there are a lot of stories, the balance of the main page is maintained. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:49, 9 June 2007 (UTC)
image gallery-fy? –Doldrums(talk) 11:13, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, if we keep the images big enough. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:45, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- i don't think we'll be able to keep the images big, there'll be too many of them at some point. –Doldrums(talk) 11:53, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Because we want to stress image quality also, I think it's necessary. You could sort them by month or by forthnight to keep oversight, and archive older images.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:55, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps we should put each image on its subpage (ex template:Featured picture/2007/june/25) then it is easy to archive - similar to how portal:football game list works. Bawolff ☺☻ 00:09, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Captions should be specific
"Federal elections in Belgium today..."
Can we make sure that captions that reference "today", "yesterday", "tomorrow" all have "June 9, 2007--" or whatever in front of them, so that people don't have to guess. -- Zanimum 17:25, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Alternatively, we could include the date.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 18:03, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Featured picture for July 12
Doesn't it say above that the pictures should be free? the licensing info on Image:HD 189733b.jpg say it is copyrighted.
But if we are going to feature the picture of planet, HD 189733b, shouldn't we use the high resolution version? [1] --SVTCobra 13:03, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
