Algerian news --> second lead

edit

Can we please make the algerian second lead instead of first, its a day old, and i am tired of all this killing nonsense being given first lead.
Instead please give the NASA plant finding first lead spot (:O) -Nima Baghaei talk · cont 04:16, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Guidelines for the Lead article

edit

The lead article template presents the current top story on the main page. It uses a nested template to do so.

What defines a lead article?

edit

Articles which are placed in the lead article should be:

  • Of interest to an international readership.
  • Must be current news.
  • Must include a relevant image. If an article is breaking and no images are yet available, Image:Breaking.png may be used temporarily.
  • Must be published. This also means it must not be disputed.

Who may change the lead?

edit

Anyone may change the lead. If the lead has been up a while and there are more-current articles, feel free to update the lead with a new article.

When to change the lead?

edit

When the article is getting old. When there are more-current news. When there is breaking news of international interest.

How to change the lead?

edit

There are three templates for the lead article, {{Main lead}}, {{Main lead with secondary link}} and {{Main lead with secondary links}} The Main lead includes a link to the full article at the bottom; the Main lead with secondary link includes a link to the full article plus a link to another related article at the bottom; the Main lead with secondary links includes a link to the full article plus two links for two related articles at the bottom.

The synopsis should be very brief, 1-3 short sentences, which describe the general news event. Details are available in the article, so there is no need to put them in the synopsis. Do not use links in the synopsis.

For Main lead articles (single article) you can replace the current one by copying the following and filling in form:

{{Main_lead|Title=
|Image=
|Image text=
|Image width=160
|Synopsis=
}}

For Main lead with secondary link (two articles) you can replace the current one by copying the following and filling in the form:

{{Main_lead_with_secondary_link|Title=
|Image=
|Image text=
|Image width=160
|Synopsis=
|Secondary_Article=
}}

For Main lead with two secondary links (three articles) you can replace the current one by copying the following and filling in the form:

{{Main_lead_with_secondary_links|Title=
|Image=
|Image text=
|Image width=160
|Synopsis=
|Secondary_Article=
|Secondary_Article=
}}

Lead is protected - Darfur?

edit

Can a newbie propose a lead? It is current, hard news and well-written.

{{Main lead|Title="Darfur a powder keg" says UN Head of Humanitarian Affairs
|Image=Darfur map.png
|Image text=
|Image width=120
|Synopsis=Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator of the United Nations, said “this is the moment of truth. We are playing with a powder keg”. This followed disagreement about the role that UN would play in providing a force to help deal with the crisis in Darfur.

Kofi Annan, retiring UN Secretary General, yesterday announced agreement of African, Arab and European leaders to provide a 20,000 force...}}

If you have privileges to edit the lead, please consider this piece from Fentonrobb . --InfantGorilla 00:52, 19 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Recent change

edit

I think 1st lead should be newer than 2nd lead if the importance of both news items are comparatively similar. I don't see a possible coup more important than a civil war underway... Towsonu2003 01:04, 5 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

White Space

edit

Can someone reduce the White space that you see on the main page? DragonFire1024 11:53, 29 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am saddened . . .

edit

. . . by how long U.S. may attack Iran on April 6 has been the lead already. I know that I could change it, but after my contributions to the 'comments' page it wouldn't be right. --SVTCobra 05:51, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Broad international interest...this is a perfect first lead. DragonFire1024 05:54, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Doesn'tmatter...apparently discussions don'tmatter when someone changes it anyways. whatever. DragonFire1024 05:58, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well you can change it back. Remember be bold. That's just my opinion, and its not rooted in anything substansive, so I don't have a good basis for it. Anyways the short of it is, if you revert me, I won't revert you. So feel free to change it back if you feel its better that way. Bawolff 07:21, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Back to the old layout...

edit

...seeing as we've gone back to this from Template:Lead article with large image (why is that, BTW? The large image looked a lot better), shouldn't somebody update the newsroom? --Saxsux 15:05, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

We still use it. The old layout is secondary. It's also because we don't want a huge picture of Osama bin Laden's head on the main lead :P FellowWiki Newsie 15:18, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
