Talk:USA Today reports NSA obtained call logs from communications companies
Sources
editPlease try and find more than one source. Jason Safoutin 21:58, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- I just created the article and I will get more sources. Thanks. FellowWikiNews 22:20, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Rewrite
editI had to rewrite most of this article, because it was strikingly similar, and therefore in a Copyright violation of, the Albuquerque Tribune's article. Please review the edits, and continue to develop this article (I removed it from publish when I noted the similarities). --MrMiscellanious (talk) – 23:21, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- I did not even realize that. FellowWikiNews 23:34, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- Just made a few minor edits. FellowWikiNews 23:42, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
Publish
editI think we should publish this article. FellowWikiNews 23:52, 11 May 2006 (UTC
- Yep; it's way past time. I'll do the honours. Neutralizer 01:54, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Patriot Act addemdum
editThink it is worth adding that the w:USA Patriot Act expanded the definition of the w:Pen register to included URLs accessed and the TO/FROM/SUBJECT line of emails without a search warrant? 66.92.173.28 19:29, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Phone Company Spys
editQuest said "NO!". The others could have too. This comment in one one of the sources; "The phone companies said today they are protecting customers' privacy" is so insulting because as soon as trhe Big Fart has your phone number, he's got it all. I'd like to see another story covering the breaking of the 4th ammendment by these phone companies. Neutralizer 22:39, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Title
editTitle should reflect the story. There is no story at all in the previous title. Watch the anglo/american POV please. Neutralizer 22:46, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
No collaberative effort regarding title
editI will revert to the version that seems to fit with the article. Neutralizer 20:39, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Amgine does not seem to feel the sources are talking about innocent Americans being monitored. He asked for something from the sources; here is one from the CBS source; "a government spy agency secretly collecting records of ordinary Americans' phone calls to build a database of every call made within the country." The current title is no story at all. Neutralizer 23:09, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- Why don't we delete some of the sources and get new ones? FellowWikiNews 00:21, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
- Amgine has not responded; obviously the only story here is related to the large number of non-suspects caught up in this; not just that the govern got some records from phine companies. The current title is not acceptable, imo. Neutralizer 14:07, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

The current title, USA Today reports NSA obtained call histories on innocent Americans is unacceptable. Innocent of what? There are likely folks guilty of something whose records have been collected. The title, USA Today reports NSA obtained call histories on non-suspect Americans, is also inaccurate as there are likely individuals suspected of something whose records were collected. I don't know what an accurate title would be, however... The more bland title USA Today reports NSA obtained call histories from communications companies is certainly accurate, but it doesn't exactly explain why this is news -- I suppose it is left to the reader to know that some (many?) Americans might be disturbed by this behavior. The title needs only state facts, of course, and I think the story itself is more important than the title. --Chiacomo (talk) 20:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Good point Chiacomo; It's hard to come up with a compromise when 1 side is not actively involved. I actually prefer "non-suspects" as that has been admitted to. Neutralizer 21:05, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Title - logs vs history /Americans/suspects
editLogs is more accurate term then history. Not all the people were innocent nor Americans. Just by the numbers, it is very unlikely that they all are innocent/non-suspects of all crimes. It is also very unlikely that all people involved can be considered Americans, especially with the International calls at least one party is probably a non American--Cspurrier 21:16, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Good technical points but extreme to the point of freezing communication, I think; e.g. we could not have a title; "New Orleans hit by a hurricane" unless we knew every square inch of land was affected. I'm sorry, I don't by your analysis at all. Neutralizer 21:22, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
What is this article about?
editI just read it and it says nothing about the issue of government spying on calls of people who are not suspected of anything at all. What is the issue if not that? Neutralizer 04:06, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
