Ms. Islan Rose Nettles was born on October 10th 1992 she was a Libra she was a fashion enthusiast working at H & M and at the same time was an apprentice to a New York based fashion designer, whom also housed her from time to time, Ms. Nettles was the typical Trans women of color of her generation that once she started to transition medically she became a very visible, happy and a very driven "Millennial", she would often answer that she was already on her way to become a fashion great designer to anyone who may ask, she would also walk the runaway at any fashion show at any Queer youth Drop In Center in NYC, and her transition quickly became a fascination among those who know her. I have personally met 2 of her girlfriends and one of them clearly shares her intense passion with style.

Reverend Irene Monroe (@revimonroe) a Harlem resident reminds us that this level transphobia was not there before the gentrification of Harlem, and I agree, not that it was paradise before gentrification but at least we were allowed to "live" in Harlem.

Islan Nettles murder has made many people aware of the genocide that is taking place throughout the world of Transgender women of color some studies already start to point out that LIFE EXPECTANCY for Trans women of color is only 35 YEARS. Like the one from Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (@IACHRPress)

The trans community is the only community that doesn't have a community center or any place to call our own, Islan Nettles has become our Rosa Parks, more accurately she is our own Emmett Till but it is only because she was murdered in New York City a place that has an International reputation of being progressive and leadership in Human Rights and because she got murdered right in-front of a police precinct when she was only 21 years old, ONLY ONE YEAR AFTER SHE STARTED HER MEDICAL TRANSITION, she was only allowed to live one year in her truth, (while many cisgender women take their own womanhood for granted), or for whatever reason Islan is the only one to get this king of global attention on the East Coast. Islan Nettles is only one of hundreds of thousands (counting all those miss-gender at the morgue and on their death certificates) of Transgender women of color horribly murdered throughout the world without anyone even raising an eyebrow, NOT EVEN THEIR OWN FAMILIES. How many Trans women of color have been murdered since Matthew Shepard's tragic loss? Mind you it happened in Wyoming not NYC.

What can you do now? Please join my E-mailing List if you want to be updated on community related events and progress reports on opening a COMMUNITY CENTER for women of Trans experience in NYC, I am in need of all kinds of volunteer assistance navigating professional situations.
