Where? edit

Where did this event take place -- it is not obvious from the headline.

Yes, it is. Croydon police officer Matt Ratana shot in custody centre seems pretty obvious to me. And even so, it says the name of the building in the lede. Seemplez 19:44, 28 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps there is some difficulty because an international audience is likely unfamiliar with where Croydon is? Giving that a bit of thought. --Pi zero (talk) 22:36, 28 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Wikinews is written for the global audience, so what is obvious to you is probably not going to be obvious to someone living 500km away from you.

@Pi zero, 117.198.186.3: Is that better for international audiences?
Seems better to me. --Pi zero (talk) 15:50, 29 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

For perspective... edit

when I start a review, I generally do a preliminary check for easy-to-find similarities to sources, assisted by an automated tool. This doesn't pick up all similarities to sources; the automation isn't sapient, after all, so a human reviewer may notice similarities to source later in the review that the automation was unable to pick up; but with some human help the automation can usually show if there's likely to be a major problem (like, something too big to fix during review). This one is intermediate; I'm not sure whether the problem is manageable or not; but it may be helpful to the reporter (@Seemplez:) to see what my scratch copy looked like after I'd shaded all the too-close passages flagged out by the automation. Preferably, one would hope to submit text that won't turn up any shaded passages on the prelim check.

Here, yellow was in the first source, pink was in the second source (and the pink tended also to show up in the fourth and fifth sources, since they were also in The Sun and most news orgs reuse material to save labor — we do that on Wikinews, too). Orange is stuff that's slightly different but doesn't really keep it from being "the same".

54-year-old Metropolitan Police sergeant Matiu "Matt" Ratana was shot at the Berin Underwood House custody centre in Croydon, South London. He was shot at approximately 2am local time (0100 UTC) on Friday by a prisoner, suspected to be 23-year-old Louis De Zoysa, who is in critical condition after a bullet hit him in the neck.
A man suspected to have supplied the gun to De Zoysa was arrested in Norfolk at 2am local time (0100 UTC) on Sunday.
Medics performed open heart surgery on Sergeant Ratana and then airlifted him to hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
Sergeant Ratana was originally from Hawke's Bay on New Zealand's North Island, and he served in the Auckland Police Force for 5 years. Sources say the sergeant was just months from retirement, and moved to the custody centre as it was safer.
The suspect was detained in an area of Norbury, Pollards Hill, for possession of ammunition and Class-B drugs.
