I wandered across this protest yesterday in Puerta del Sol, in Madrid. The place has historically had a lot of protests, and I have seen others here. (The 2011 ones are very well known locally.) It was a "Community" (province) based holiday called Fiestas de San Isidro Labrador, so many shops ãnd bars and local government places were closed and there were a lot of people out. The protest started with people giving speeches using a megaphone. They did this before a sort of movable wall seen in the picture with the sign "No nos da miedo el ruido del poder nos da miedo el silencio del pueblo". They were there for about a half hour (with a number of police around them) before marching around the plaza several times. There were a number of police there. The protests talked about how they would not be silent about the abuses during the Franco regime and their desire for justice for the missing and others. After that, they left. The were probably about 50 people, so it wasn't that large in the grand scheme of things. The flag is not the current Spanish flag but the flag of the previous republic. I have provided translations in text because the signs are not in English, and my feeling was the reader may see the Spanish but not know the translation is the translation. They started around 7:30 and were done by about 8:30. People had to get out of the way of taking pictures of the fútbol signs in Puerta del Sol because the protesters were moving around the plaza. --LauraHale (talk) 08:21, 16 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
