Journalist notes

Student loans are an area of interest to me. They have come up again with the debt crisis looming. Banks are often getting complaints. This research addresses that to a degree. I think this is a newsworthy analysis, but do admit it could probably do with more contextualing though I feel it can stand on its own. The research was done today. The limits of the data set that I used appeared to exclude by state except when all data was looked at. I went to all data, filtered out on my computer all non-student loans. I then did a COUNTIF call on excel and got the following totals by state:

My difficulty is that I don't know what the focal statistic (Sallie Mae had the most complaints about student loans) means, because I don't know what fraction of student loans were provided by Sallie Mae. If, hypothetically, I were told that most desktop computer user complains about operating systems were about some version of Microsoft Windows, I'd want to know (among other things) what fraction of desktop computers use some version of Microsoft Windows. There are presumably a variety of ways to address this concern. The issue ought to be addressed somehow in the article, though, because if this question occurs to me when looking at the article, it either will or should occur to other readers. Questions about the above? Ask. If possible, please address the above issues then resubmit the article for another review (by replacing {{tasks}} in the article with {{review}}). Added a source and a sentence. I cannot find good numbers for these because student loans on that level are dealt with by the Fed and they are not releasing that information. The first paragraph should make clear that Sallie Mae is the biggest complaint source and the biggest lender. The top five also are in there. --LauraHale (talk) 15:06, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

The spreadsheet often faultered in inspiring confidence because the numbers resulting from analysis were deposited into the spreadsheet as constants instead of being computed within the spreadsheet from the raw data (notwithstanding that having intermediate stages of the derivation was obviously better than not having them). The counts by state (the last major effort during the review) were afaics derived from raw data that wasn't in this spreadsheet, leaving no way to corroborate them beyond comparing the stats on the talk page to the stats in the article — and those didn't agree with each other, leaving me no recourse except to either choose which I trusted more, delete the whole paragraph, hedge (which didn't seem practical under the circumstances), or not-ready the whole article over it. While data mining of this sort is an interesting approach to original reporting, for repeated efforts this example would need improved upon; computed derivation in the provided spreadsheet, for example, becomes very important when such derivations are the main substance of the article. The reviewed revision should automatically have been edited by removing {{Review}} and adding {{Publish}} at the bottom, and the edit sighted; if this did not happen, it may be done manually by a reviewer.

Wrong photo of SLM headquarters

The image at the start of the article is out of date. That building now houses Verisign as SLM moved corporate headquarters to Delaware from Reston VA two years ago.
