Mind the gap edit

The proper title for Apple's operating system is OS *(space)* X. The title of this article should be changed.

You know work goes into creating these news stories. To some, they believe the work is for their critical target practice.

One or some lazy and inconsiderate soul(s) come along and butcher stuff. When a person is motivated tear down, it's a shame they show no effort to re-build. The attitude is, "Let me go bang on a story to suit my world-view." Then they walk away.

Why can't we tolerate others' point-of-views? To say something is 'not news' when something is happening is insane. It's all news. Some happened to be aware of the Apple OS release, others not.

So what if Apple gets some free publicity, that's not the point. But for the IRC snippent to be removed, judged "meaningless to readers" when it formed the headline, was to remove solid first-hand reporting. Further, after moving the story to a new headline, the RSS and 2nd lead headlines are out of sync and left unchanged! What kind of crap is that? -Edbrown05 17:45, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

The original title was not npov. Further, IRC is meaningless to most people. Sometimes editors seem to think everyone who reads this site are techno-geeks - well, they're not. IRC? Amgine? Whu? Dan100 (Talk) 20:21, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
I think you're not being fair here, Dan100. The fact that some people don't use IRC has nothing to do woth it. The snippit was simply part of an original interview with someone who has seen the OS already, and whether this is done by IRC, IM or snailmail even is irrelevant. -- Redge (Talk) 20:28, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the fact that Tiger has been on sale for just over a week warrants a news story. Its release probably did, but that's been and gone.

Perhaps there is some angle here we could develop into a news story (bearing in mind that we don't do reviews)? If someone could find some first-week sales figures, that would be great to run with (eg "Apple's Tiger sells 10,000 copies in first week"). Dan100 (Talk) 10:27, 6 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

I was trying to show the reactions to it after briefly explaining what it was. Is the title POV? Probably. Is it funny? I think so. Virtually everyone reading this will be using either Windows, Mac, or Linux so I don't think it is a bad type of advertising, as people must inherently already have one of these. I only added the notnews tag, not the clean-up one :). That said, the title isn't really acceptable as it is, but then neither is the article. Dan100 (Talk) 18:37, 6 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Dan100: This article certainly is news - A current event, international interest, etc. However, the article as is is a review of the product; we don't currently have policy to cover reviews. This would be a good candidate to create that policy. So I'm going to rewrite it.
FWIW, i've sat through 'news' stories on the local channel in Raleigh, NC that 'reported' how sales increasaed at a certain area Papa John's on rainy days. This is infinitely more newsworthy. If the IRC snippet is a bother to people, perhaps it could be reworded as "one user commented online, '.......'" --Morbid-o 13:38, 9 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and the title? it really was a quote from IRC. - Amgine/talk 20:53, 6 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
Judging by the recent discussion on the water cooler, I think we've formed a policy against reviews. Dan100 (Talk)
If I want to read how great the apple OS is I'll go to the apple official site. This shouldn't be counted as news, no software details should be in the news! We have Neowin and Slashdot for that! Keep the news articles to a quality and type that would appear on a news program such as BBC, SBS or ABC, or in a major newspaper. I come to Wiki for unbiased news, I don't want to be confronted with propaganda.
I'm sorry that you feel you can blank articles arbitrarily. If you dispute the content of an article, try editing the article, or adding a dispute tag, or request the article be deleted. However, vandalism such as page blanking will get you blocked. And your opinion is much more likely to be listened to or heard if you login to an account, after your 24 hour ban is over with. - Amgine/talk 02:57, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
I feel the article as it is now is not POV based. Advantages and drawbacks to the new version are discussed alike. As for the not news: I think we need to lighten up on this. If we're a few days late reporting an event, that does not make the event unnewsworthy or a follow up article automatically inferior. Let's just look at this article without labeling not news or NPoV and re-asses whether we want to keep it. -- Redge (Talk) 20:28, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Of course;this kind of news IS advertisement edit

  • as It's free, and soon it will be worst.
  • anyway, here a less entousiastic version :

  • title : Apple Computer Inc. releases Mac OS X 10.4-Tiger.
  • Last week the Cupertino's firm release it's last operating system called Tiger (10.4). Apple announced more than 200 new features from developper to end-user usage:

Major additions are :

  • Dashboard : a reborn of the famous Control Panels used into macOs9 and older OSs. The big difference is  : anyone could write one as it's html and script based.
  • Spotlight : enhancing the system seaching capabilities with the use metadata from unix terminal to high level applications.
  • Xgrid : in order to facilitate grid-computing (a kind of shared computing well known by Seti@home fanatics,...).
  • Xcode 2 : new free tools set for developpers including graphic data modeling (UML tasty)
  • mainly all basics applications send with the system included new features. Safari goes to RSS for example (Microsoft stops porting Internet Explorer on MacOs)

Rewrite and moved edit

I've rewritten the article, added sources. The original author has purchased and reviewed the software personally. The factual statements are sourced, so far as I can tell. Please review and list any extant issues. - Amgine/talk 22:28, 6 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Jonathan Alter did an OS article in the periscope section of the May 2 issue of Newsweek talking about the Mac and Windows releases. -Edbrown05 02:40, 7 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Page blanked by User:60.240.170.238 edit

What the history tab for this story now notes as User:60.240.170.238 who blanked the story, was at the of the blanking occurrence going by the handle known as User:Azkabar.

I tried, but couldn't roll back the vandalism. How the user names changed is unknown to me. -Edbrown05 00:11, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

With a big revert like that, select the previous version from history, click the edit tab, add an edit summary (such as "revert page blank vandalism") and save.
The IP presumably logged in after blanking the page to delete the entry in the archives. - Amgine/talk 00:14, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Record of 2nd blanking of this story by instance of IP User:60.240.168.11 -Edbrown05 05:37, 8 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yes I did. I was trying to get rid of non-news, not vandalise the site. I should also add that I didn't reply as to my reasons earlier because quite frankly I couldn't figure out how. Wikipedia is kinda wierd in terms of finding out how to do stuff. - Azkabaz
