Bush, Merkel press conference
editI watched the live feed of them talking on the lawn. It was with both original language and a translation (that is german and then english for Merkel, english into German for Bush. I made notes of what they said, and am going to write up a rough transcript here. Then anybody who feels like it can write an article from it, right (As I have more important things to do >D, like write up the transcript of Barrosos press conference). Notice, this is not verbatim, but from notes and memories, with some translation by me:
Merkel: Ladies and Gentelmen, we've had a first meeting with the American president during this G8. We spoke through the whole of the Agenda, and we agree on a lot, but some things we still need to work on. [some of the topics, cant remember all]. Fighting poverty, giving globalization a human face, world trade, freedom of invesment, international conflicts (I think regarding this) , which we hope to be able to contain together. The main topics are the climate and poverty in Africa. These first talks were good [...] [sorry I wasn't quick enough and missed some stuff] but I trust that with some work a common position can be formed.
Bush: [...] and I'd like to note what a fine place you have chosen for this summit. We've talked about important topics: The fight against HIV/AIDS. Combatting the spread of malaria. We have also said that we have a strong desire to work on a post-Kyoto protocoll [Emphasis mine, in my opinion this is the most important bit of what they said. Barroso refered to it in his press conference later on]. I´m thankful for the work your team has done in preparing this summit, as I´m sure its a lot of work to do.
(As he is finished, he remarks jokingly to Merkel that she could now translate).(After his bit has been translated he ask Merkel if that was what he said, she replies "almost one hundred percent, which gets a laugh from him).
Global agreement on climate change mitigation necessary says
editI had wanted to be at the actual press conference, but due to blocages by protesters :), I decided against and watched it on TV here in the press center. Unfortunatly they cut away from the press conference about half way through (and continued to run it on a channel we didn´t get sound for). By the time we got sound again he was answering questions. As my notes are very patchy, I`ll give my recollections of what he said first and then write up as much of a transcript as possible. Sean Heron 16:34, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
In what I saw, Barroso said that a global agreement on climate change mitigation had to be made soon, if possible by 2009, to replace the running out Kyoto protocol. He stressed that, as this was a problem created by all nations, effecting all, it had to be tackled by all as well. He said agreements made by only a number of states would fall short of what is needed. He also said that as it is to be a global agreement, it would have to be made within the UN-framework (in answer to a later question, he stated that the large amount of work that has been done in this regard must not go to waste). He also (I think in answering a question about Bushs proposal of the biggest 15 "polluters" agreeing on action) says that it is generally a good thing if a some states discuss about goals together, but that the agreement must be found (as said) in the UN-framework. He goes on to state that the developing nations will have to be included in the proccess of decision making as well, as from 2012 onwards the developing nations will be emmiting more greenhouse gases than the developed nations. Of importance was also that the agreement achieved had a binding character, and included a fixed ceiling for greenhouse gas emmisions. He doesn´t however beleive that an agreement regarding the hard numbers could be made during the summit.
Rough transcript of Barrosos Press conference in Heiligendamm on Wednesday 06.05.2007: ... Three priorities (???) Climate change (one of the three). [...]. some years ago when Galileo [the satelitte navigation system, my note] was progressing scientifically, some people were apposed. The same is true for climate change, which has seen a lot of scientific progress as well. There was a lot of opposition, and there still is some. [..] I really believe this summit can make a difference. It is not (von nirgends) that China and the USA have moved on their position a few days before the summit. In fact it is thanks to the EU´s leadership that ... [? sorry]. The EU and its member states stay commited to their aims. ...
Comments and stuff

Balancing
editI like all the images on the right, because it makes the layout uniform no matter what screen resolution a reader has... But doldrums and brianmc seem to disagree so go ahead if you insist. A QuoteLeft like Brian suggested might also do the trick. --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:47, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- i don't particularly mind both images being on the right. but if they are, they shouldn't be placed adjacent to each other when they are of different sizes - to me, that layout looks awkward. –Doldrums(talk) 11:51, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- I'm going to study now, but I just have to say the current layout hurts my eyes :-). --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 11:58, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you Doldrums, that episode of acute anterior uveitis quickly subsided.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 13:44, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
