Newsworthiness?
editSeeing this in my feed reader made me curious of Wikinews' policy: does this qualify as newsworthy? There are between 30,000 and 40,000 fatal accidents in the US alone every year (http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/Main/index.aspx). Why is this newsworthy, but not the other 100 deaths that occurred today? (I wish I had statistics for England, to prevent opening an off-topic discussion; can we just assume the number is comparable/proportional for the sake of understanding my question?) 76.168.95.118 (talk) 13:02, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
- My understanding is that the number is about proportional if you account for number of road users, maybe a bit higher in the US; it doesn't really matter though, it's clear where you're going. Wikinews:Newsworthiness makes little mention of the issue, which actually surprises me as there is currently a consensus that local stories can remain. We have a local only category and this article falls within it; if we reach a stage where we get lots of local stuff then articles like this will be given a lower visibility. Hope that helps. Makes sense, thanks for the speedy response. I do appreciate the fact that subscribing to the main Wikileaks feed includes local stories such as this one, so please don't take my question as a complaint or a request for fewer stories. Keep up the great reporting! 76.168.95.118 (talk) 13:29, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
- No problem! Thanks for taking the effort to understand; too few people just complain without attempting to find out the thoughts behind the issue. Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 14:16, 19 September 2010 (UTC)
