Talk:French parliament approves bill on Armenian Genocide denial

Latest comment: 18 years ago by Nyarlathotep

Article is POV against the bill, needs a bit more time to develop, ideally with the help of those who work on the Armenian Genocide article. Nyarlathotep 09:28, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

i agree, need a more balanced article. Jacques Divol 10:06, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've added more stuff, its not exactly organized, due to two competeing themes, but the info itelf is more npov.
I'm surprised since I'm pro and I wrote the article... Maybe it's just because there is a lot about the reactions it provoked? --Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:37, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
heh, yeah, that happen surprisingly frequently.
I've reread the original version I wrote, and I can see know where the impression comes from... maybe a bit of overshooting of NPOV in one direction, making it imbalanced, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a better ordening I guess.--Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 16:52, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I objected to two points, you accidentally exadurated the number of people who oppose the label genocide, and you neglected to mention the estimates of the numbers of dead. I fixed both quickly when I found time. Nyarlathotep 13:08, 14 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

french historians protest

edit

Perhaps this article should have included a mention of the group of French historians who protested against the this bill and are campaigning to have the previous bill, relating to recognition removed.

Some of these just disagree with the predetermination of historical study in general and others simply do not accept the Armenian thesis. Pierre Nora, for example, has complained that the "The French parliament is being held captive by Armenian pressure groups." Another, Jean Michel Thibaux, has taken Turkish citizenship and has moved there.

This is an issue that has been ongoing in France for quite some time - i.e. the prosecution of Bernard Lewis for disputing the Armenian version in a 1995 interview with Le Monde, and the contraversy surrounding the appointment of Gilles Veinstein as Chairman of College de France because of an article he wrote in 1993 to the same effect.

It seems proper that it therefore be discussed in the article.

why isn't the title "France recognises Armenian genocide"

edit

Title is muddy and confusing. Here's the real news: "France recognises Armenian genocide"

BBC got it right [1] -- posted by User:RobKelley

The article you linked to is from May 29, 1998 so it clearly doesn't describe the news at hand. --+Deprifry+ 23:16, 13 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

The title is correct. The supposed "real" news is an old news, it happened in 1998. France has gone one step further; she will punish people if they will otherwise. From now on, French can not disagree the government and say "I do not recognize Armenian genocide, it was not a genocide but death of many in war".

This is a better news; French can not say what they believe, if they are contradict the government!
