The defense team's strategy is reported in various media outlets to have been concentrated from the outset on preparing for what is now the next phase of the trial, i.e. sentencing, which is why they only called four witnesses and otherwise put up a relatively pro forma defense. His conviction on all charges was pretty much inevitable, so the defense team were, and continue to focus, all their efforts on preventing their client from receiving the death penalty.
