American mystery writer Phyllis Ayame Whitney died on February 8, from pneumonia. She was 104.
She was born on September 9, 1903 in Yokohama, Japan.
Whitney wrote more than seventy novels. In 1961, her book The Mystery of the Haunted Pool won an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for Best Juvenile novel, and she duplicated the honor in 1964, for The Mystery of the Hidden Hand. In 1988, the MWA gave her a Grand Master Award for lifetime achievement.

Feb 15: Steve Fossett, Adventurer, 63
editSteve Fossett, the US adventurer who set world records in the Fields of Aviation and sailing was confirmed dead on February 15. Although he has been missing since September he was only recently declared dead by a Chicago judge. His body has not yet been discovered.

Steven Phillip Kazmierczak killed himself after firing shots which killed and injure 16 others in a shooting at the Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, United States. He was enrolled at the university in the spring semester of 2007.
