Matt Cooke scored 32 seconds into the game to get it started for the Capitals. Alexander Ovechkin scored his 50th goal of the season 6:18 into the first period to make it 2-0. Ovechkin scored again 50 seconds later to put Washington up by three. Matt Bradley scored to make it 4-0 before the halfway point of the first period. Ovechkin completed the hat trick with a power play goal with 4:29 left in the period. Brooks Laich put Washington ahead by 6 going into the first intermission with a power play goal of his own. Dennis Wideman scored a power play goal 36 seconds into the second period to put Boston on the scoreboard. Capitals rookie Nicklas Backstrom scored his 14th goal of the season at 7:50. Donald Brashear made it 8-1. The Bruins added their second goal when Marco Sturm scored with less than 3 minutes left in the second period. Laich scored his second goal of the night 2:03 into the third. Bradley scored his second of the night to put Washington in double digits in the closing minutes of the game. Cristobal Huet made 20 saves in the first two periods before leaving with back spasms. Ovechkin had two assists to go with his hat trick.

In a rematch from last year's Stanley Cup finals, the Ottawa Senators travelled to Anaheim to face the Ducks. Todd Bertuzzi scored first for Anaheim, putting them ahead at 11:58 in the first period. Corey Perry scored a power play goal for the Ducks at the 15 minute mark. Just 35 seconds later, Christoph Schubert scored to put the Senators on the board. Scott Niedermayer scored his 6th goal of the season just under halfway through the third period, putting Anaheim ahead by 2 goals and giving them their sixth straight win. Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 24 saves, earning his 30th win of the season.

Montreal Canadiens @ San Jose Sharks

Patrick Marleau scored 56 seconds into the game to give the Sharks an early lead. Montreal answered with a Tomas Plekanec goal 2:22 into the first, but San Jose retook the lead 24 seconds later when Joe Thornton scored his 18th of the season. Ryan O'Byrne scored his first career NHL goal to tie the score going into the first intermission. In the second period, Thornton scored his second of the night on a Sharks power play to retake the lead. Plekanec scored his second of the night nearly 10 minutes later to tie the score again. Jody Shelley put San Jose back on top with his first goal of the season. In the third period, Jonathan Cheechoo put the Sharks ahead by two goals. Maxim Lapierre put the Canadiens within 1 less than a minute later, but a power play goal by Brian Campbell, who spun around one of the Montreal defenders, secured San Jose's victory with 1:39 left in the game. Evgeni Nabokov made 27 saves for the Sharks, who have now won 6 straight.

Wikinews Player of the Day

Today's Wikinews Player of the Day is Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals. Ovechkin scored three goals and two assists in the Capitals' 10-2 win agains the Boston Bruins. His first goal was his fiftieth of the season, making this the second 50-goal season of his career. Ovechkin jumped ahead of fellow countryman Evgeni Malkin as NHL points leader.
