Municipal elections pushed back in Haiti
Tuesday, August 9, 2005
Local elections intended for this fall have been pushed back in Haiti. On Tuesday the electoral council said that they had determined that the best course of action would be to postpone the October 9 municipal elections until December. The idea is to allow for all efforts to be put into the presidential elections.
In addition, the presidential elections will be moved up from November 13, to a new date of November 6. The runoff for the presidential election is scheduled for December 11. About 1.5 million people have registered to vote so far. The council says that the postponement of the municipal elections will not affect the handover of power to take place on February 7, 2006.
