On Saturday, Intense Tropical Cyclone Chido made landfall on the east coast of Africa at category 4 intensity and devastated the French island territory of Mayotte.
The storm uprooted trees and overturned boats. In some parts of the territory, entire neighbors were reportedly leveled.
Mayotte had a population of 300,000 and was the most impoverished territory in the European Union. Many of its residents resided in shacks with roofs improvised with sheet metal.
The precise number of casualties remained unknown, and the French Interior Ministry expressed worry that the death toll could grow.

The neighboring island nations of Comoros and Madagascar were also affected by the storm.
