Fernando Torres signs contract extension with Atlético Madrid

Spanish footballer Fernando Torres has signed a one-year contract extension with the capital-based club Atlético Madrid, the club announced on Monday.

Torres joined Atlético Madrid's academy aged eleven and made his debut appearance for the rojiblancos in 2001. Torres spent six seasons with Atlético, then transferred to Liverpool F.C., then Chelsea FC.

Last season, Torres scored twelve goals in all competitions and crossed the landmark of 100 goals for the Atleti. Atlético were third in the La Liga table and faced a defeat in the UEFA Champions League against their city rivals Real Madrid. Torres has won 2010 FIFA World Cup and two UEFA European Championships in 2008 and 2012 with Spain.

Last month, Frenchman Antoine Griezmann signed a contract extension with Atlético Madrid which runs until the end of June 2021.
