This article could also mention an effect of sugared drinks on the body's hydration; due to osmosis at the intestinal wall, sugar particles inside the intestines draw the body's water from the interstitial cavity into the intestinal lumen. The dehydrating effect on the body actually is harmful rather than helpful when thirst is trying to be reduced by the drinker.
