Category:Pages using DynamicPageList

edit

@Green Giant, Bddpaux, Chaetodipus, Gryllida: any idea why Category:Pages using DynamicPageList is showing up on the infobox and which is being cascaded to many other pages and cats?

@Acagastya: I've also asked Bawolff as well. I'm not sure, and there's nothing on MediaWiki, but phabricator:T287380 suggests it may been have recently patched into the DPL extension for tracking. —chaetodipus (talk · contribs) 03:54, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
This suggests maybe why. —chaetodipus (talk · contribs) 04:02, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
If I am understanding it correctly, that commit was added by @Legoktm:? In any case, we tend to avoid any red links -- be it in article body, or in the categories section whatsoever. I would appreciate if the community was first informed about such testing are to be done, rather than we finding out testing (for the purpose of stats) is being conducted and try to find a solution. While I understand the situation can be tricky, doing these things to prod-wikis without approval or at least a warning is really not a good sign. And FWIW, DPL is the heart and soul of organising things here.

its pretty hidden once its marked as a hidden category. I don't really see an issue. But yes, devs want to collect statistics on how much the extension is used on different wikis, and maybe remove it from large wikis that don't use it. Bawolff 04:58, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
It is hidden because, well, we didn't want a red link to appear -- and we should have been informed before, not after.

Hi, adding a tracking category is a pretty background thing. Normally we would've waited a week so it would go in tech news, but I hope you can understand that we're moving pretty quickly to address DPL issues after the most recent sitewide outage. If your concern is that we might disable DPL while you all depend on it, I don't think that's likely based on how it's currently used on this wiki and the edit rate here. Or are you worried about something else? Legoktm (talk) 06:18, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

that is one of the two concerns, yes. One being the red links. Articles should not have red links and if such tracking cats are needed, please inform the community, so we can mark them hiddencat before the commits are deployed. I sincerely request to please let the community know before, not after.

That's fair, but honestly, you shouldn't even have to do that. I filed T287702 to have MediaWiki automatically mark these categories as hidden. Legoktm (talk) 18:37, 29 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
