A US Chinook helicopter crashed in south-eastern Afghanistan 80 miles south west of Kabul, killing at least sixteen people on board. Another two are missing, presumed dead.

The crash is believed to be an accident; there are no indications that it was shot down.

The helicopter went down near the city of Ghanzi at 2.30pm local time in bad weather while on a routine flight to Bagram airport. A second helicopter which was with the first arrived at Bagram safely.

Rescue operations were started at once but work at the site has been suspended for the night.

The identities of the dead are currently not known.
