A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

Article about Wagner Group's rebellion edit

I started an article titled Private mercenary group rebels against Russia about this same event before Prigozhin halted the advance. I had submitted it for review but the story developed too quickly and the article now needs to be updated.

You are free to incorporate parts of or all of that article into yours or finish the one I started. I doubt I will have time to do much work at all on this one now.

I use html comments to cite my sources for reviewers. You can see the comments using Source editor mode.

Let me know if you have any questions. I might have some time later this week to work on the story — should you decide not to complete your version. If you continue working on yours, I'll step back and let you take it over the finish line.

I am relatively new to Wikinews and therefore lack experience. However, I believe we can collaborate on the article you previously created and further develop it. I expect that your article is relatively issue-free, unlike mine, which may contain some errors and be relatively brief. I am willing to contribute to your version by providing suggestions and exploring other avenues to enhance its quality. Thanks. Asked42 (talk) 14:16, 27 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Great! Feel free to jump right in and edit the article started: Private mercenary group rebels against Russia. Feel free to adjust what I have already composed by changing tense, adding or subtracting content, etc.
It should be relatively straight-forward for you to incorporate your content starting around "On Saturday, 24th of June, the Wagner Group began to withdraw..." into the background content I have and expand from there. Remember the focus of the article. The title dictates the who, what, when, and where. If you want to continue with the "stability" angle of your article, you'll have to adjust the article slightly to reflect that and then make the content flow through the inverted pyramid. You'll also have to change my title, which is easy to do (click on "More" at the top and select "Rename").
I do think the stability question is now the main concern regarding the incident.
Here are a couple links to articles I've collected since the incident, in hopes of updating and expanding what I started:
https://news.sky.com/story/russia-rebellion-wagner-group-troops-to-be-absorbed-into-russian-military-as-mercenary-boss-yevgeny-prigozhin-heads-to-belarus-12909128
https://www.economist.com/europe/2023/06/24/how-the-mutiny-in-russia-will-shape-the-battlefield-in-ukraine
The following Twitter list has a lot of good, open-source intelligence (OSI) that can get you links, help make sense of things, provide context, etc. Just be careful about using any OSI as a direct source for an article. You have to vet it all very carefully yourself. I've never tried to use it as a direct source so I don't know if it's permitted. But I do often rely on it to get context and links to stronger (and more-mainstream) sources: https://twitter.com/i/lists/1483456727219683332?s=20
Again, feel free to jump in to what I created and do what you need to do with it. For the next day or two I won't have a lot of time to help. I may have more time closer to the end of this week. Don't wait for me and don't worry about me being offended by your changes to anything I have already composed.

I will try to do it based on my expertise. Whenever you have time, please make the necessary changes to that edit. If it doesn't seem very good, simply undo it and do what should be done. Also, I believe it is risky to entrust the initial work to a newbie. Perhaps, I will try! Thanks! Asked42 (talk) 17:52, 27 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Adiprush article edit

Please look at my comments on the Talk page for that article. We have a certain tone/style we favor here. I have left you some suggestions there. Let me know if I can help you in some way.--Bddpaux (talk) 21:37, 30 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have seen your comment on the talk page of the Adipurush article, and I will do my best to follow a news-style approach and incorporate the suggested edits you made. I don't have a journalistic background, so this is quite different and somewhat challenging for me. Another challenge I encounter while writing articles is that English is not my native language, which may result in tone and tense issues. Thank you for your help. France article edit

Excellent start on that article. Keep at it!--Bddpaux (talk) 21:45, 30 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

I am struggling with this sentence: " Authorities have reported numerous arrests and injuries, including among police officers." I am not sure about the meaning of that. Are police officers being arrested AND being injured?--Bddpaux (talk) 16:26, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
The sentence means that police officers are also sustaining injuries. Asked42 (talk) 16:35, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
This sentence was based on examples of reports and clashes, which can be found in the third and last source articles. Asked42 (talk) 16:48, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
OK. --Bddpaux (talk) 16:55, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

kenya story edit

is it stale yet? Thank you. HushPuppie280 (talk) 22:10, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

As per WN:Stale, "An unpublished article is typically considered stale when it's five to seven days old." So I guess it may become stale. However, I am unaware of what the exceptions are. Asked42 (talk) 22:24, 3 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
