Wikinews talk:What Wikinews is

Good for first timers edit

I think this is an excellent summation of what Wikinews is and ought to be. We should probably have this linked on the appropriate "Getting Started" pages once we agree on it as a policy. MikeEdwards 21:09, 19 Jan 2005 (UTC)

What Wikinews could be edit

In recent years, I've been very concerned about the corporate news media in the United States moving away from localism. I would like to see Wikinews work to restore this somehow. Build crews of local "reporters" from localities around the world who don't just repeat news from existing paper and electronic sources, but also generate news from their own reporting on the scenes of local events. I would especially like to see greater coverage of local politics and neighborhood events that the corporate media seems to miss sometimes because they're so concentrated on "murder, weather and sports." I don't think all Wikinews has to be "interesting" on a global level, as real local news is what we're missing the most in the U.S., and local news in Louisville, Kentucky probably would be of very little interest in Bangalore, India. I am essentially looking for a glocalized news source that provides an alternative to corporate media. Stevietheman 05:52, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This is a part of what we would like to do. One of the elements of this is to have people, local people, doing original reporting on what is happening - in their neighborhood, school district, town council meetings, etc. I really think this is what will make us stand out as a way for everyone to make, and be, news. - Amgine 22:25, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
