April 10, 2007

We have added a new theme song to the video (updated version on the right). I want to thank brianmc for his hard work in getting this music and a variety of tracks we can put some theme music together from now and in the future. DragonFire1024 14:06, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Credit for the music goes to The Dynamos, this was from a week-long session that resulted in a CD I have the master of ending March 2, 1997. The music was recorded in Hart Street Studios, Edinburgh and the credits are as follows:
  • Ciaran Bradley: Bass guitar.
  • William Cambell: Backing/lead guitar.
  • Andy Dunnigan: Lead/backing guitar.
  • Gordon Findlay: Drums/percussion.
  • Engineer: Roy Aitken
  • Produced by: The Dynamos, Roy Aitken, Brian McNeil.

So is this music copyrighted, or is the promo licensed under CC-BY?  Thunderhead  ►  18:24, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know everything is CC. DragonFire1024 18:26, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can't we use the old music? FellowWikiNewsie 19:46, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, the old music is the Sky News theme which is copyrighted and owned by Murdoch's BSkyB. Personally, I'd rather have a ticker type sound like the classic Tar Sequence that became synonymous with Eyewitness News. --TUFKAAP 23:00, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree TUFKAAP. DragonFire1024 04:59, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Licensing... Following earlier discussion when people had been given a chance to listen to the music I got in touch with the band and explained that I was interested in seeing use of some of that music under a compatible license. The specific track that was discussed was When You're Down as it had met with the most approval. I can upload sections from this under CC-BY-2.5 (They trust me to edit appropriately). Anything else can't go on Commons until I discuss it further so please, stop hacking bits out and sticking some pictures with them.
I would appreciate if people would remember that I've been sharing music on a private page that is not linked to from anywhere. You have not yet been provided with a licensed copy of the music, merely a personal one.
Now, with that said I suspect you're going to lose stuff from commons, mainly because people have jumped the gun. I have an agreement reached by phone that only discussed one song, and not even all of it at that. To be on the safe side I want to verify my edits are okay before putting them on Commons. Only then should they be used in video segments on Commons. Now, if someone does a hack job cutting them shorter, they can upload the new version too (due to CC-BY-2.5), but at least there will be an original which presents the musicians in a good light. I also assume there's musicians or sound people on Commons who can tell when someone cuts half-way through a bar. --Brian McNeil / talk 18:32, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
BTW...I like the music. DragonFire1024 19:06, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know, you keep trying to get other people to listen to it. :-) --Brian McNeil / talk 20:41, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We have completed the second original Wikinews Promotional video/commercial which is currently being broadcast for everyone to see on YouTube. I created the images and the animation Idea, but screwed it up royally and Zachary bailed me out big time by making the video in the end.

It features a short glimpse of landmarks around the world from countries or reagions that have Wikinews Sites. Since we needed it to be short, this is just the first commercial, with a second to come in the near future.

In the mean time, perhaps you want to download the video? Well you can and its FREE! Just go to the Wikimedia Commons area and download it. (the file fomat is .OGG though so you will need to download a special codec and I forget where :-/ ). Please enjoy :) DragonFire1024 10:01, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Looks nice. Easy (no codec required) link — http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/commonsJOrbisPlayer.php?path=WikiNewsVideo-DF1024.ogg . for info on codec see w:Wikipedia:Media_help Media. Bawolff 22:15, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well Symode09 has created Graphics 3.0 through 5.0 and I must say that they are very good! :) DragonFire1024 04:57, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikinews Video's 3rd promotonal video is done! Watch it. DragonFire1024 21:57, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

April 13, 2007

Stickeylabel has created some new logos. On the main project page, a new animated logo (which is not animated on the project page).

A new player has also been created by Symode09. I am not sure where it is located, but If you ask him I am sure he will explain it to you :) DragonFire1024 04:59, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

April 15, 2007

Although it was created on April 11, 2007, We now have a YouTube page for the release and broadcast of Wikinews Videos. This is going to be the main broadcast point I believe...and since the videos/news casts will be created under the CC attribution license, The videos will still be 100% free and can be downloaded from commons once they are complete. DragonFire1024 03:44, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, We have checked the copyright on symode09's opening theme (top right video), and the images there are able to be used. Also the theme music that is currently there will be the same song, but in a different tone/mix. DragonFire1024 03:49, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We are not halting the project! This is the time when we are attmpting to find funding options through the WMF and or possible grants.

At the moment several users from Wikiversity are assisting Wikinews Video 2.0 in writing draft grant proposals and searching for possible way that the project could be funded.

We are also taking this time to take in all the pretty major news events lately that have gotten in depth coverage already on Wikinews, and we are looking at those news stories as possibilities for a broadcast. We are still looking for something similar to the 60 Minutes or Date Line format, but not necessarily an hour long or even 30 minutes :)

So while all this happens, and final touches are made on graphics, the project will move quite slowly in terms of production and so forth. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available. DragonFire1024 19:27, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just a reminder to all of those interested in doing news reading for Video Wikinews. While we continue the "creation" process regarding the actual broadcast, we encourage all of you to get involved and speak Wikinews.

We would love for users to practice or show off their skills by reporting Wikinews articles in the form of audio. Anyone who has a microphone can do it. Simply go to the help page of wikinews audio for help on how to record an article. DragonFire1024 06:34, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
