Wikinews:Automated article listing poll
Regarding
editWe've been getting complaints that it's difficult to move an article from Developing stories to Latest news and fix a link if an article's name is changed. In response to that, NGerda has implemented a system where all that a user need to do to have an article display in either Developing stories or Latest news, is take advantage of the {{Date}} tag (already widely implemented), and have either {{Develop}} or {{Publish}} at the bottom of the page. This is achieved through a special MediaWiki feature called DynamicPageList. In addition, if someone changes the title of an article, the list is automatically updated. Due to controversy over this issue, this has been disabled, so this is an outline of the issues that need to be addressed. A preview of the system is available at Main Page/Temp (notice Developing stories and Latest news).
Concerns
editMakes it hard to follow what's new.
edit- In each day's list, articles with the most recent changes show up highest within each day's list.
- Some see that as an advantage, easily highlighting recently updated articles.
Cannot highlight Original Reporting.
edit- The list is automatic, therefore you cannot add text next to an article link.
- Original reporting can easily be highlighted with a right-side table.
Problems with caching.
edit- DynamicPageLists take a few seconds to update themselves when a new article is created or an article's name has changed.
- To view the latest version of Developing stories and Latest news on the Main Page, you have to do a Cache Refresh anyways.
