New coverage request

Hi. You did an excellent job covering the United States elections. I was wondering if you might take a small stab at covering some of the Australian election news in the lead up to the elections in September? Julian Assange will likely be running for the Senate in Australia. Bob Katter's far right party looks like it could be highly influential in terms of determining who controls that body. Tony Abbott appears to be running on a platform based solely on "The Labor government lies." All of this comes at a time when Australia appears to be making a huge historical shift from looking towards the UK and the USA to being focused on Asia and in particular China as a ay of proping up the ecnonoy. --LauraHale (talk) 11:06, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Wikinews Writing contest 2013 is here. :) Please sign up to participate?

We've created the Wikinews:Writing contest 2013, which will start on April 1 and end on June 1. It is modeled on the successful 2010 contest. It would be a really great time for you, as a Wikinews accredited reporter, to do some original reporting and conduct interviews. People should be around to interview to prevent a backlog, and several reviewers have access to scoop to make it easier to review any original reporting you do. Disappointed

• From the reviewing side of the fence: it was doing what we could to try and bring the articles up to a publishable standard. Where that could not be done - because it would switch reviewer into co-author - advice was offered. Sorry if you interpret that as 'carping', it is intended to be constructive criticism.

This language edition of Wikinews does not allow self-publication; in contrast, much of the mainstream have ditched sub- and copy-editors. I'm sure you've spotted the typos and other errors this sees in print, or online. Reviewing fixes those, but the reviewer can't do a substantial rewrite without disqualifying themselves from applying the {{publish}} tag.

I suppose the only consolation I can offer is that we have 'license compatibility' with Wikipedia; you can copy what might not get through review here, in a timely manner, and use it there. --Brian McNeil / ^talk 06:38, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

I have no idea what's the "magic" in this article, but it went 'viral' on Facebook; and, the "reach" of our page has stayed pretty high since it was published.

Assistance with understanding how much original reporting costs

Hello and I apologize for writing in English. As all language Wikinews improves, The Wikinewsie Group wants to be able better support original reporting done by contributors like you. One of our newsletters at The Wikinewsie Group/Newsletter said you have recently published an original report. This is why I am contacting you.

Members of the The Wikinewsie Group are trying to assess the costs associated with original reporting across all Wikinews projects. This way, we can determine how much original reporting currently costs, who is paying for it, what Wikinews and other projects get for these costs (especially when paid for by unpaid, volunteer contributor reporters). This information can then be used in applying for grants, measuring the success of Wikinews original reporting and seeing how reporters can be better supported. If you could complete this survey on that topic, we would very much appreciate it. We will try to anonymize the responses as best possible when writing up any report. Thank you very much for taking the time to fill it out (especially in English). Please do not hesitate to ask me or pi zero about any questions you may have about this research. wikinewsie.org email

Hi!

Am I right in guessing you're still actively using your wikinewsie.org email address? Do you need the quota increased on it?

I would warn that I'm looking towards the move of hosting to Iceland; that's going to best be resolved with people pulling their mail down first; message IDs will not be sure to stay the same, which could end up with all server-stored emails flipping to 'unread'. --Brian McNeil / ^talk 16:29, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

• Ah, sorry. I did suspect it might be something like that. I assume you've got email enabled on your Wikinews account? If so, I'll do a password reset for you. No Gmail, though; as far as they're concerned, any email between a UK citizen and a foreign party, can be fully scanned into PRISM. Using a Gmail collector against wikinewsie.org email means a copy goes straight into the Great Big Cloud under Fort Meade (our mail server is based in Amsterdam, soon to move to Iceland). --Brian McNeil / ^talk 22:05, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
