Welcome to Wikinews

A nice cup of coffee for you while you get started

Getting started as a contributor
How to write an article
  1. Pick something current?
  2. Use two independent sources?
  3. Read your sources before writing the story in your own words?. Do choose a unique title? before you start.
  4. Follow Wikinews' structure? for articles, answering as many of who what when where why and how? as you can; summarised in a short, two- or three-sentence opening paragraph. Once complete, your article must be three or more paragraphs.
  5. If you need help, you can add {{helpme}} to your talkpage, along with a question, or alternatively, just ask?

  • Use this tab to enter your title and get a basic article template.
[RECOMMENDED. Starts your article through the semi-automated {{develop}}—>{{review}}—>{{publish}} collaboration process.]

Welcome! Thank you for joining Wikinews; we'd love for you to stick around and get more involved. To help you get started we have an essay that will guide you through the process of writing your first full article. There are many other things you can do on the project, but its lifeblood is new, current, stories written neutrally.
As you get more involved, you will need to look into key project policies and other discussions you can participate in; so, keep this message on this page and refer to the other links in it when you want to learn more, or have any problems.

All Wikimedia projects have rules. Here are ours.

Listed here are the official policies of the project, you may be referred to some of them if your early attempts at writing articles don't follow them. Don't let this discourage you, we all had to start somewhere.

The rules and guides laid out here are intended to keep content to high standards and meet certain rules the Wikimedia Foundation applies to all projects. It may seem like a lot to read, but you do not have to go through it all in one sitting, or know them all before you can start contributing.

Remember, you should enjoy contributing to the project. If you're really stuck come chat with the regulars. There's usually someone in chat who will be happy to help, but they may not respond instantly.

The core policies
Places to go, people to meet

Wiki projects work because a sense of community forms around the project. Although writing news is far more individualistic than contributing to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, people often need minor help with things like spelling and copyediting. If a story isn't too old you might be able to expand it, or if it is disputed you may be able to find some more sources and rescue it before it is listed for deletion.

There are always discussions going on about how the site could be improved, and your input is of value. Check the links here to see where you can give input to the running of the Wikinews project.

-- Wikinews Welcome (talk) 04:51, 6 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Glad to see your interest in contributing to Wikinews. Our initial learning curve can be a bit steep, and we know it and try to help folks along with it; a good principle is to keep in mind that each article is a learning experience, especially the first few ones submitted: one does one's best on each article, learns what one can, and then, whatever the outcome for that article, one moves on — that's the nature of news, it keeps moving.

In this case, I noted some basic style problems, which I described in my review comments. Naturally, I don't know what other problems may have been lurking, that would become evident later in a full review. Alas, it also took the article longer to get reviewed than we would like; that does sometimes happen, even to experienced Wikinewsies, although, hopefully, once you get experienced at Wikinews writing so you're producing articles that look like they will be easy and rewarding to review, this increases the likelihood that the article will get reviewer attention sooner (though it's never a guarantee).

You may find WN:Pillars of Wikinews writing of interest. If you've worked with Wikipedia enough to identify with its workflow, you may find Wikinews:For Wikipedians of interest.

Welcome to Wikinews. :-)  --Pi zero (talk) 15:24, 2 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Pi zero: Thank you for the comments and advice. Will look into the suggestions and learn from the mistakes. CASSIOPEIA (talk) 00:52, 5 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations! The article is published. Well, there is a scope of improvement, please see the edit history and talk page comments.

@Acagastya: you for taking so much time to review the piece and will take note on the comments. Appreciate it.

Bayern vs Borussia DFL Supercup

edit

Are you planning to write about Der Klassiker DFL Supercup? The match is tomorrow . I would be happy to review it as soon as possible. Just a suggestion, try to find those sources which would cover broader information so total number of sources could be minimised. Of course, if you can't find it in one, go for another. And maybe you might want to see some CAT:Football Match Reports for archived articles for help. Good luck!

@Acagastya: Will write it and thank you in advance for helping up.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by CASSIOPEIA (talkcontribs)
Let me know if you are going to write. Else I would have to do it. (By the way, User:Ymnes of Dutch Wikinews told me about Netherlands vs Denmark UEFA Women's Euro 2017. You would like to write about?) (Also, Usain Bolt finished third in 100m race, that might interest you) Um, you should join Wikinews (and English Wikinews') IRC channel. That is #wikinews and #wikinews-en on freenode, net. (Just wondering if you use Telegram. We have a group for Wikinewsies)

@Acagastya: draft is up in development section. Need help to rework as I don't have in dept knowledge of thier rivalry history and the soccer report format. I am still editing it. You can have a look.CASSIOPEIA (talk) 06:10, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Okay. I will see. This would also act as the article which would help you learn how to write a match report. (Is the development on-wiki? I can't see it. Please share the link.)

@Acagastya: Football: Bayern Munich beat Borrusia Dortmund on penalties (2-2) (5-4 penalty) to retain Supercup titl (it is a draft- a little messy still) CASSIOPEIA (talk) 06:16, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the link. By the way, I don't think we need to explain the whole lot of rivalry, as this is a match report. We can say it is "Der Klassiker (German classic), featuring two of the most successful clubs in Germany". That would suffice, I think. What do you say? (If you feel like cutting the history part, remove it. If you feel you want that in the article, then it is okay. But remember, we do not list the sources we have not used -- meaning, if you remove the history of rivalry, you need to remove the source which you had used for it) But, you could highlight about the recent transfers from Bayern and Borussia (Sebastian Rode, Mario Götze, Mats Hummels, Robert Lewandowski)
acagastya PING ME! 06:41, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Do not forget to submit it for review once you are done.
acagastya PING ME! 06:51, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
the rivalry story comes from only one source (Fox sport 2017) in sequential concise format, except Mario Gotze transfer fee (from Guardian 2013). I need help on the score card format, it does not look right and not sure how to format (own goal) in the table. T Move to review now. and thanks in advance. CASSIOPEIA (talk) 06:56, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Would you mind if I trim the rivalry part? I think it is really too much for a match report (we son;t even do that for El Clásico) Of course, you can say no.
acagastya PING ME! 07:34, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
We could trim that or just mention a few points sum up the rivalry history. CASSIOPEIA (talk) 07:42, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Talking about Champions League final which happened in 2013 is really of no use, we can say about last year's DFB Pokal (Bayern defeated Dortmund) and DFL-Super Cup (Bayern defeated Dortmund) and Goetz, Hummels, and Rode switched the clubs last summer. (See DFB-Pokal Final: Bayern wins 4-3 in Der Klassiker final, Mats Hummels completes Bayern signing, Sebastian Rode signs four-year deal with Borussia Dortmund and Götze to make Dortmund return, Schürrle completes Dortmund offensive lineup)

Tennis?

edit

Are you interested in tennis also? Defending champion Stan Wawrinka would not participate in the US Open, he posted on Facebook saying he is out for 2017. You might want to write about it.
acagastya PING ME! 18:05, 4 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Acagastya: - Let me see what I can do. I am into sports, especially MMA, the faster growing sport for the past 5 years, and I am interested in politics and science as well.
Oh that is great! I cover some sports articles. (Which of course, someone else has to review) But if you write, I can also review it — making things happen quicker. Which sport do you think you would like to write about? (So that I can suggest you, or even request to cover, if I can't) Let me know if it is too much for you, (as you are new, and some of these things might not be easy; I remember when I started, it was with football articles, and I had to struggle a lot!) We would decrease the speed. Thank you.

@Acagastya: UFC (mixed martial arts), rugby, tennis, basketball and track and field. Do suggest for I welcome that.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by CASSIOPEIA (talkcontribs)
There is some sports event in London -- and it might be the last appearance for Usain Bolt. That might also interest you.

Acagastya, will work on Usian Bolt article. His last run would be on next week, if Jamaica make it to final on the 4x100 and I believe they will. For now I am gathering the background info. Will update you accordingly.CASSIOPEIA (talk) 07:45, 6 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
