Hong Kong 'tutor king' Karson Oten Fan Karno, known to the city by the pseudonym of 'K. Oten', has stirred up more controversy lately. Cantab Education, for whom he used to work, has cancelled all classes led by Fan and his ex-wife, Cherlotte Ng, for various reasons. According to the tabloid The Sun, Cantab Education has notified the police on the matter.
Cantab Education has had doubts about the professional qualifications of Fan and Ng. They also suspect that the couple have caused the tutorial centre some monetary loss, retrieved student information via 'inappropriate means', and persuaded other tutors and students to teach or study at other educational institutions.
Fan is a well-known but controversial English tutor who has taught under Modern Education and King's Glory before turning to Cantab after applying for bankruptcy because of legal expenses. He claimed to have 9,000 students at the peak of his career. In his notes he used words which some parents considered coarse, and he reportedly used profanity in class. He has also been accused previously of copyright infringement before, but was not charged.
Fan has apologised on his Facebook page.
