José Manuel García-Margallo the Spanish Foreign Minister had previously stated that enthusiasm for Scottish independence amongst European Union representatives was 'nil', and that with regards to membership of the European Union, the status of an independent Scotland would have been that of a new applicant state, with no fast track accession to the European Union.
