Although being indirectly related to the Army 2020 Refines, the Specialised Infantry Group was formed.
The Specialised Infantry Group is the second newest larger formation of the British Army. The group was formed for counter-terrorism training, operations, and specialised training. Unlike the other battalions of the British Army the specialised infantry battalions will be a smaller, reduced, stregnth of 267 men compared to the normal 559. In Early 2018, it was announced that the Gurkhas would be expanded by 2 signal squadrons, 1 engineer squadron, AARC support battalion platoon, Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas expansion and one infantry battalion.[1][2]
NEWS
On 11 March 2019, the 3rd Battalion was reformed after the original 3rd battalion was disbanded following recruitment problems following the start of the Nepalese Civil War. This 3rd battalion was formed as a specialised infantry battalion and will be based in Aldershot Garrison. This battalion will be one of the 5 battalions assigned for this training and counter-terrorism support.[3][4][5][6]
