Chinese Communist leaders and the family of the late purged party chief, Zhao Ziyang, have agreed to bury him on Saturday, nearly two weeks after his death. The burial has been delayed over disagreements between Mr. Zhao's family and the government over the funeral arrangements. For many in China and overseas, the former premier of the chinese Communist Party symbolized the drive for a reassessment of the government's 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators in Tiananmen Square.

With just days to go before Sunday's historic poll to chose a new government in Iraq, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has invited the people of Iraq to exercise their democratic rights.
The poll, the first free elections in a generation, faces disruption from insurgents who are totally opposed to democracy. Annan warned the insurgents not to intefere and promised continuing help from the UN for the country in the future.

Direct charter flights between Taiwan and mainland China have begun this week. The Republic of China government on Taiwain hopes the flights can form the basis for further negotiations and better relations between them and the People's Republic of China.

The crew of the International Space Station took a 5 hour spacewalk on Friday. Russian Salizhan Sharipov and American Leroy Chiao installed a 20-inch robotic arm on the exterior of the space station.
