"Why write at Wikinews? What do I learn?" edit
The mission of Wikinews is
- To present up-to-date, relevant, newsworthy and entertaining content without bias (Wikinews:Mission statement)
This can be achived by citizen journalism, or participatory journalism. Why participate? What do you learn while you participate? Here it is, in no particular order. (All these abilities can be transferred to other activities, such as your work or family.)
- Identify who, what, where, why, when, how - often unclear or missing in mainstream media
- Identify fake news and bias, and verify facts (fact-check): Mainstream media is often misrepresenting or missing key information. Information can be verified by checking multiple sources and in some cases original reporting.
- Write: write the news in your own words, clearly in a way that flows (Wikinews:Inverted pyramid)
- Collaborate: Working on a story requires responding to feedback from others, quickly. The feedback may be useful, require research, or be a result of misunderstanding. You will learn to collaborate with people from different continents.
- Work with deadlines: Wikinews writing requires completing the writing and revisions in tight deadlines. You will learn to prioritise the required additions or changes to fit in the time frames (Wikinews:Fresh)
- Take notes: If original reporting, learn to identify relevant information which needs to be included in the report. Learn to take notes, and process these notes afterwards to produce an accurate report.
