Employees and customers alike expressed loud disapproval over some US retailers deciding to open late on Thanksgiving day, instead of the customary Friday morning times associated with Black Friday.
Both Walmart and Target opted to open business at 8:00pm and 9:00pm, respectively, on Thursday. Some sources indicate a contingent of Walmart employees are planning on-site protests at certain locations over pay and benefits disparities. When asked about the early store openings, one Target employee in Texas told Wikinews, "I think it's wrong."
Change.org. a site designed for online petitions is hosting a petition addressing Target's CEO to complain of the Thanksgiving practice. As of 6:30pm on Thanksgiving night, the petition had garnered over 371,000 signatures. A woman in Tyler, Texas told Wikinews, "The Black Friday thing is absurd enough as it is. 2am on Friday morning is early enough for any retail store to open. It's just wrong what they're doing to their people. I will not be shopping anywhere on Thanksgiving night."
One man, who has been employed at a Walmart in California for four years told media that although he is scheduled to work on Black Friday, he does not intend to work. The man said, “Walmart needs to learn that it’s not fair how they treat us.” Some experts predict, though, that most customers will not significantly alter their shopping plans, even if they see employees picketing in store parking lots.
