The United Nations’ human rights office has revealed that almost 93,000 people have been killed in the Syrian civil war, although the actual number is likely to be ‘much higher’. The U.N. announce on Thursday that there has been 92, 901 confirmed killings between March 2011 up until the end of April this year, including at least 6,500 children.
“Unfortunately, as the study indicates, this is most likely a minimum casualty figure. The true number of those killed is potentially much higher,” UN rights chief Navi Pillay said in a statement. "The constant flow of killings continues at shockingly high levels, with more than 5,000 killings documented every month since last July."
The study, which relied mostly on statistical information, showed that 80% of the victims are male. The majority of the study does not indicate age, or differentiate between civilians and soldiers.
The report comes less than a month after the U.N. released a separate annual global report on children and armed conflict, which states that children in Syria have been tortured, used as human shields, maimed, and used as soldiers during the conflict. It also coincides with current government debates in Washington over the decision to provide arms assistance to the Syrian opposition to President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
