Talk:Sydney prepares for Forbes Conference and 30A protest

Article name

edit

The name was long, however "Australian Police Commissioner" is innaccurate. - Borofkin 09:35, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I've changed "New South Wales" to "NSW", however I fear that Dan won't like it. :-). It is my opinion that if you don't know what "NSW" stands for, then you are unlikely to be interested in the article. - Borofkin 09:39, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
You have to include the name of the country, many people have no clue where "NSW" is. I don't think the name of the state or province is critical to the title, so that could be left out if title is too long. StuRat 09:44, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Aren't you being a little bit selective? Why haven't you renamed these articles:

- Borofkin 09:48, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Good point, I will. I normally don't bother fixing titles of previous day articles, though. StuRat 10:12, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
I don't have an issue with including the country name, generally. I think it will become more of a problem as Wikinews becomes more localised, however. - Borofkin 10:14, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
I would say the country name is needed unless it's ONLY published under that country's news, or if the name of the city is so famous that everyone knows where it is, perhaps Paris, London, Moscow, Beijing, and New York might meet that criterion. StuRat 10:23, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
I thought Sydney met also your criteria ... It is the biggest city in the Oceania, not only the capital of Australia. Aphaia 03:45, 30 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Whilst I share your sentiment, Sydney is not the capital of Australia, Canberra is.

Interview with Bruce Knobloch, spokesman for 30A network

edit

I called Bruce Knobloch, spokesman for the 30A network, to ask for his reponse to the acting commissioners comments. Here are my notes on his comments during the call:

"I've just been down to the Opera House. The security is quite extraordinary - the ammount of concrete and metal is a great overreaction, it's quite disturbing."

"Citizens who want to protest are labelled intrinsically anti-police

"The police are the meat in the sandwich"

"So they paint you as the enemy. "

"The assistant commisoner has been very pig headed."

"The only training I know about is something called non-violent direct action. This is exactly what it says: non-violent"

"It's a ridiculous claim. We live in a society where nearly everybody wants to be peaceful, and only the police have the weapons. Concerned citizens are not fools. The 30A network has no secrets, we have been very open about our intentions - to have a carnival protest."

"It's amazing the degree of paranoia going on at the heads of the NSW police force. We are a bunch of community activists and concerned citizens who have a right to protest agains the war profiteers and free-market freaks."

"The protest is gainst free-market maddness. The conference attendees are people who believe that the free-market can solve all of our problems, e.g privatisation, including things such as water. One of the conference attendees works for a private water company."

30 August 2005 9:00am - Police Operation

edit

I walked all around the barricades taking photos. The information in the article about the security operation around the Opera House is from my observations. - Borofkin 00:22, 30 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Please combine articles on Australia protests

edit

We seem to have multiple articles on essentially the same story, please combine them all into one. StuRat 09:47, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

To which articles are you referring? There are currently seven articles relating to the 30A protests, written over the last week (or so). Each article refers to distinct events that have occurred at different times. Which articles do you think should be merged? - Borofkin 09:51, 29 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Sources not cited correctly / Second Part POV

edit

Is something wrong or do two of the links cite the same article ('game-on')?

The entire second part of the article is POV. I could demonstrate that with a simple para or word count. The herald sun 'quotes' like 'leftists' is meant to make the reader sneer. I cannot find any article in the sources with these quotes. Could someone please help me find them?

Sorry about that, one of the URL's was wrong in the source. I've fixed it now, and I'm removing the sources tag. If you think any part of the article is POV, please edit it to fix things up, however note that this article is reporting what the Herald Sun is reporting, and there is plenty of stuff refutting what they are saying. - Borofkin 03:17, 30 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
Thanks I can now read that article and am reminded at what a hyphenated rag the HS is. The use of 'hard-core' in scare quotes and 'leftists' in the article is the authour rolling his eyes. Kicking it back at them in the wikinews article is on par with the original crap article. It should be an important part: "The Leftist protesters said they could not guarantee the rally would be free of violence or that they would obey police exclusion zones" but Packman isn't quoting anyone directly.
Yep, it's undoubtedly Herald Sun crap. - Borofkin 03:44, 30 August 2005 (UTC)Reply
