Russia and the North Pole

edit

If Russia claims the North Pole, we Yanks might as well claim Mars and the Moon. While the first landings on Mars were indeed Russian, they were crash landings and failures to report back; the first success in landing on Mars and communicating back to the Earth was an American success. We also succeeded in landing people on the Moon first, who planted a flag at Tranquility Base (although the first lunar ROBOT landings were Russian). Rickyrab 14:43, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh yeah, and if you want to get picky about national "claims" (based on landings) on the Moon:

To Russia: Western part of the Ocean of Storms (Oceanus Procellarum), western "shore" of the Mare Imbrium, part of the territory between the Mare Imbrium and Mare Serenitatis, part of the eastern "shore" of the Mare Serenitatis, the Mare Crisium, and the Mare Fecunditatis.

To the United States: the craters on the southern near side of the Moon, the Sea of Tranquility, Medu/ Hipparchus region of craters, the eastern areas of the Oceanus Procellarum, and the mountains north of the Mare Vaporum. Rickyrab 14:51, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

and what about the North Pole?

edit

It's actually American - Admiral Peary was first there in 1909, on the ice. Rickyrab 15:13, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

and so is the South Pole. Although Norway was first with a guy named Amundsen, the US placed a base there later on, and so the nearest human settlement is American, just a short walk away. So why not claim the South Pole for America. Rickyrab 15:29, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think there is international agreements in place that halts any national claim in the antarctic. 85.166.65.153 14:59, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
