Talk:Larry Rhoden replaces outgoing Kristi Noem as Governor of South Dakota

Latest comment: 2 months ago by Michael.C.Wright in topic Review of revision 4836952 [Passed]

@Melledelle: I'm going to answer your questions here because, technically, any Wikinewsie may work on this article while it is being developed. I'm going to divide my recommendations into "Must have" (I am confident the reviewers won't publish unless someone fixes this problem) and "Would be nice" (would improve the article but it could probably be published anyway) and "Wikinews has usually preferred."

I see a lot of good stuff in here. The article gets straight to the point and Wikinews reviewers tend to like that. You used solid source format, made some good choices.

Must have: You have two sources confirming that Rhoden was sworn in but only one of them mentions when it happened. One seems to say Saturday (focusing on accession) and the other seems to say Monday (focusing on the ceremony). I recommend adding (not replacing) a fourth source that states which day the ceremony happened.

Would be nice: We usually add a quote from one of the major participants in the focal event. The two sources you provided have plenty of quotes you could choose.

Wikinews conventions: Most reviewers that I've worked with state a preference for getting as much of the Who, What, When, Where and Why into the first paragraph as is reasonably possible. Yes, you could say the where is "South Dakota" because that's the area affected by the event, but they're probably going to want to know where everyone who participated in the ceremony was standing. I added that information. I put it in a separate paragraph this time, but I wouldn't be surprised if a reviewer chooses to move it. I also added a source confirming that the conference room in question is in Pierre, South Dakota. Yes it seems obvious that the ceremony would take place in the state capital, but here on Wikinews we WN:NEVERASSUME.

Another convention is to start with the day on which the event happened. I wrote "Yesterday" here and put <!--January 27--> in code in case "yesterday," changes to "Monday" before this goes through review.

Overall, this is one of the best first-timer entries I've ever seen. Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:02, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Oh, so I can just add the third source then and a quote from one of the previous sources?
Yeah it looks fine I guess. Melledelle (talk) 14:19, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes. You don't need to remove the existing sources. Just make sure that there are at least two for every core fact of the focal event: You've covered who (Rhoden) and why (because Noem left for another job), but you should get another that confirms when/what day (Monday, January 27), specifically what (was sworn in), and where (in that conference room/in Pierre). Darkfrog24 (talk) 17:24, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
You accidentally hit on a slightly advanced issue: What counts as a focal event. Technically, your two sources cover two different concrete events, 1) the swearing in ceremony and 2) the succession. They're both part of the same general event, Rhoden becoming governor at all, but because they happened on two different days, Wikinews would usually treat them as two different focal events.
It's kind of like how the English Prince Charles acceeded to the throne immediately upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, but he wasn't crowned until his coronation many months later. Darkfrog24 (talk) 17:27, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes I understand, I'll try and fine another source then Melledelle (talk) 21:00, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

The Statehouse source is here solely to establish that the Governor's Large Conference Room is in Pierre, South Dakota. Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:07, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Notes

edit

Hi @Melledelle, I've made a few edits:

These changes are mostly minor, but addition of photo. So I cannot review now. Suggested further changes which are optional for publishing:

  • describe time of day and/or procedure or number of attendees of how ceremony occurred
  • add photos of the ceremony, if available under suitable free licence

Happy to answer questions if desired. Gryllida (talk) 02:53, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

You'll note here that Gryllida has specifically made minor changes. If Gryllida, a reviewer, were to make major changes then Gryllida would not be eligible to review the article. One of the other reviewers would have to do it, and the review team is small enough that that could mean the article doesn't get reviewed. Darkfrog24 (talk) 13:52, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
It looks good, good to see it published :)
I'm probably gonna post more sports news in Sweden on Wikinews but then the reviewers needs to read it quite fast so it does not become outdated. Melledelle (talk) 23:09, 30 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Sourcing

edit

Because the clock is ticking on this subject's WN:FRESH, I added the fourth source to give us the two we need to cover the focal event. Darkfrog24 (talk) 13:57, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

The USA Today source links to the SDPB page and the Keloland Media Group source links to the USA Today article. The USA Today article and the Argus Leader articles are the same article by the same author. Only one is needed, preferably not the syndicated version, per Wikinews:Style guide#Citing syndicated (wire agency) content.
I can't modify sources and remain uninvolved for review.
I am generally available to review before noon, Pacific time. If another reviewer want's to review this one before I get back to it, please do. This looks like great collaborative work! —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 19:40, 29 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Drat. Thanks for the catch. Darkfrog24 (talk) 00:21, 30 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I used the URL from a previous version of the article to fix the Keloland URL. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 15:27, 30 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hard to believe, but I've never seen this happen before. In between then and now, Rhoden has announced plans for who will replace him as LG: [1] Darkfrog24 (talk) 19:07, 30 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Good catch. There is a 24 hour grace period after publication, during which the article can be updated. I should be available tomorrow morning (Pacific time) to review and sight any changes or updates made. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 19:38, 30 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I made a one-line, one-source change. I feel a press release is suitable for a straight-up supporting fact such as this one. Darkfrog24 (talk) 17:52, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I rolled back this edit by mistake. I meant instead to not accept the pending change with the comment/edit summary stating that it is over 24 hours since publication and therefore not within the grace period.
A correction to the story may be in order. Heavy Water, Bddpaux, what do you think? Below is a correction draft:

This article states that South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden had not yet announced a nominee for Lieutenant Governor. However, prior to publication, USA Today reported that Representative Tony Venhuizen had been nominated for the position.

The verbiage of the correction can be updated if the content of the article should also be changed as part of the correction. I'm also unsure about linking to the USA Today article from within the correction. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 18:06, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sure. Sounds good to me.--Bddpaux (talk) 19:06, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
As long as it's factual. Darkfrog24 (talk) 19:10, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Michael.C.Wright: Yeah, that looks good, except I wouldn't credit USA Today (really the Sioux Falls Argus Leader) specifically (but still link to it as a source) since it appears this was not an exclusive but a public announcement by Rhoden. This is a good reminder of the need to, when saying something hasn't happened yet, mention the as-of-when (usually, the most recent of those provided by your sources). The reviewer should probably also check if there've been further developments on any such front.
The correction probably ought to acknowledge how the headline's focal event (Rhoden replacing Noem) isn't the same as the article's (Rhoden's private swearing-in), which when combined with the lede's failure to make clear when discussing the actual transfer of power that it took place on Saturday, could easily lead someone to believe they took place approximately simultaneously. Something along the lines of, "The headline and lede of this article together seem to imply the transfer of power from Noem to Rhoden was simultaneous with the subject of this article, the swearing-in ceremony for Rhoden. The former took place two days before the latter." Heavy Water (talk) 05:35, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
I'll be more careful when checking the lede and headlines for congruency. I'll also be more careful to check for further developments, especially when the article says something hasn't yet happened.
I have posted the correction. Please check and adjust or sight it if it's acceptable. Thank you. —Michael.C.Wright (Talk/Reviewer) 14:56, 1 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
