User:Cspurrier please write what you claim is POV. The template you put says that there's some POV claims on the talk page. i don't see them. Boud 22:34, 17 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I got a bit side tracked. The story is a good one but is very POV. Here are the bits I see as POV " it allegedly concerned discussions of human rights" "even though many of the participants, such as Tony Blair and Italian prime minister Berlusconi, were allegedly involved in systematic human rights violations such as war crimes" "In contrast," and "The charge is considered to be unfounded by the human rights activists ". Some of these can be fixed by rewording it it ,but the whole stroy has a definite bias. This could maybe be fixed by finding a qoute or two from the other side. The other problem I saw was that it is a controversial topic that did not get its time on the devloping stories page, for the most part stories stay on the devloping storie page for at least a few hours.--Cspurrier 23:17, 17 May 2005 (UTC)Reply
i agree that it makes sense to leave stories on the developing stories page for a few hours. i haven't been following the details of how wikinews culture is developing, and i followed the guide on Wikinews:Writing an article which said Finally, you need to add a link to your story on the "today's articles" (http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=Wikinews:2005/May/19&action=edit) page. If you're happy with your finished article, follow this link (http://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Developing_stories&action=edit) and remove your story from the developing stories template. If you think it needs more work, leave it there.
i've corrected this so that it's clearer that the norm is to wait a few hours on the developing stories page. Boud 14:56, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

How long should we wait for an unsupported claim of NPOV? A few hours? Boud 22:46, 17 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

This is an important story and it could be improved by some restructuring. The point of the story is that the journalist has been arrested at a protest, so you don't need to lead on claims of war crimes by the leaders of Britain and Italy. A news story is also not the place to imply that those leaders are being hypocritical at a human rights gathering: that will be done elsewhere.

i don't understand how presenting context which has already been NPOVed in the wikipedia is POV. Detaining a journalist (if the real reason is to suppress independent journalism) is a human rights issue, the conference was claimed to be about human rights, and the context in which the conference participants themselves are human rights violators is IMHO a relevant fact of interest to people trying to understand what happened and why. So, you could start with:

A journalist has been arrested outside a Council of Europe conference in Warsaw, in what activists have claimed is an attempt to suppress freedom of speech in Poland. As the Council conference met to discuss human rights conditions in the 46 member countries of the European region, around 1000 protestors gathered outside.

- I assume they were protesting about the war and trying to get Blair and Berlesconi arrested?] Make this clearer: put their views across rather than your own -

Hmmm, AFAIK it's probably true that nobody overtly asked for Blair and Berlusconi to be arrested at this demonstration, though there was an earlier attempt by some of the demonstrators to go through court proceedings against Kwaśniewski. Boud 14:56, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

The journalist from Indymedia was filming the events (photograph - tall man in yellow/orange coat at right) when he was arrested. He remains under detention and has been charged by state authorities with assaulting a police officer. Activists have said that since the journalist was filming the events virtually continuously, he had little chance to carry out any violent attacks against the police.

- A quote from some of them would be good here. You don't necessarily need a quote from the other side as they may not comment, but possibly worth a try from the police if you have time. Or have any media organisations or journalists unions commented on the arrest? -

OK, these are good suggestions, thanks. Boud 14:56, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

You could finish with: Authorities arrested 11 human rights activists in total, including members of Amnesty International and Indymedia.

Is there some history at the moment of journalists being arrested or prevented from doing their work in Poland? This would give backing to your assertion that freedom of the press is being challenged. ClareWhite 08:19, 18 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

The wikipedia freedom of press link gives some background on court cases against one newspaper owner and against an artist - probably they should be cited more specifically, not just as a link.
OK, i'll get on to this soon hopefully, thanks for the suggestion Clare and Cspurrier :) Boud 14:56, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

new version edit

How's the new version? Boud 15:50, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

i don't see any more comments since two and a half hours ago, so i think i can safely remove the NPOV template and shift this from developing. Boud 18:23, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm commenting. The article is still in need of more neutral tone, and possibly addition content. Let me take a crack at editing quickly, but I am short on time. - Amgine/talk 18:28, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

OK, this is another source (sorry, only in polish), but it's worth adding, so i'll paste it here while you're editing (we're all short on time - that's why otherwise rational people sometimes get upset at each other) Boud 18:45, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

title edit

i'm not really sure if the title is good enough - the journalist was not detained physically inside the conference room of the council of europe people, and the council of europe participants did not (overtly anyway) directly accuse him, so i'm not sure about at. Maybe during?

And the important fact is that he remains charged - he risks an 8 year prison sentence - hmmm, that's probably missing from the article. At the risk of having a title which is too long, something like: Journalist charged, risks 8 yr prison sentence, following Warsaw human rights conference ??? Boud 18:51, 19 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

math edit

This is good
