Talk:Interview: Wikinewsie Kim Bruning discusses Wikimania
I've been terribly paraphrased with the cunningham speech yet, and my name isn't spelled right in the title ;-) I fixed most other stuff. :-) it might be better to just change this to prose, and look up the relevant data , because this isn't going very far. :-/
spelling ??
edit"The wikis could drft back and fro between computers" what are this words ? Drive back and forward ?? I havent corrected it since i'm not sure of the meaning.
- I think Kim's original words were "drift back and fro" -- I changed this to "to and fro" for more clarity. Cllewr 20:35, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Notes
editThis interview was held in #wikinews real time chat on IRC. Thus, I present the following IRC log as my notes. (P.S., Obviously the published article contains paraphrases of Kim's words (as well as mine). This is to create a condensed and easily understood text. Kim has already granted me permission to paraphrase.)
Cllewr = Jonathan Collwer, kim_bruning = Kim Bruning.
<Cllewr> What were some of the most common questions for Jimbo Wales <tomg> any big media organisations there? <kim_bruning> yes a lot! <Cllewr> yeah, answer tomg's question too <kim_bruning> german and dutch national media <Cllewr> such as? <tomg> eep <tomg> is this an interview <Cllewr> any americans? <kim_bruning> yes <tomg> I didn't realise that <Cllewr> tomg: sort of <kim_bruning> it's an interview <kim_bruning> tomg, don't worry! <tomg> (leave out the bit where I say "is this an interview") <kim_bruning> ask questions! <tomg> (and that line) [and this one] <kim_bruning> yes this will be edited! <kim_bruning> now then <Cllewr> what news organizations, precisely <kim_bruning> I dunno if americans came for sure <Cllewr> ? <kim_bruning> reuters did <kim_bruning> errr 3sat if my image caption is correct <kim_bruning> dutch NOS news <kim_bruning> oh and wikinews... sorta ;-) <kim_bruning> aftenposten from ... <Cllewr> i can't tell if you're still responding <Cllewr> ok to ask something else? <Cllewr> btw kim pls log this in case my computer crashes <-- KevinMarks has quit ("The computer fell asleep") <kim_bruning> I'm logging <Cllewr> good <Cllewr> shall we go onto another question? <kim_bruning> I seem to have misplaced my cache of business cards sompelace <kim_bruning> ask elian for a rundown! <kim_bruning> she has the list afaik --> Marc (N=cdcf4e04@rdns.151.240.218.216.fre.communitycolo.net) has joined #wikinews <Cllewr> tomg? <kim_bruning> actually! <Cllewr> wait are you asking for me to interview tomg instead? <kim_bruning> theres a dbase <Cllewr> what? <kim_bruning> No I'm not? --> avar (N=Huld@adsl6-56.simnet.is) has joined #wikinews <kim_bruning> there's a database of presspeople <kim_bruning> I'll dig <kim_bruning> next q in the mean time <kim_bruning> over 100 representatives of the press were there <Cllewr> Besides interviews, jimbo was a featured speaker at wikimania. what did he focus on in his speech, what was the reaction? <kim_bruning> (no idea, missed that talk) <kim_bruning> ah wait <kim_bruning> he was blogging for larry lessig <kim_bruning> http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation%27s_first_Wikimania_convention_held_in_Germany <kim_bruning> based his speech on 10 things that want to be free <kim_bruning> here: <kim_bruning> http://www.lessig.org/blog/ <kim_bruning> (scroll down) <Cllewr> what other speakers were featured at wikimania? what words did they offer towards wikimedia's present state and also the future? --- Marc is now known as marc7 <kim_bruning> there were 70+ speakers <marc7> can anyone tell me why access to #wikipedia is "blocked"? <kim_bruning> http://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/Speakers <kim_bruning> here's a list <kim_bruning> marc7, I'll ask <marc7> ah, just from the web-based irc client. got it. <kim_bruning> marc7, ^^;; <kim_bruning> okay, nm <marc7> thanks though! <kim_bruning> we're doing an interview <kim_bruning> maybe you have questions to ask too :-) <marc7> yipes, sorry, i'll pipe down, i'll let you know via privmsg if I do <kim_bruning> ok very important was the keynote by ward cunningham about past and future of wikis <kim_bruning> marc7, just ask here <kim_bruning> this will be condensed :) <Cllewr> marc, we're going to edit things out so it's ok <kim_bruning> and don't make it an irc log transcript <kim_bruning> just use the information you get from me :-) <Cllewr> don't worry, i won't <kim_bruning> might be handier :-) <kim_bruning> ok, you're good :-) <Cllewr> do you mind if i put it in interview format and paraphrase your words? <kim_bruning> It might be nicer to just put it in straight format <kim_bruning> I'm not important ^^;; <kim_bruning> but do what you like <Cllewr> i think it's confusing to do it in prose though <kim_bruning> not mentioning my name is a plus :-) <Cllewr> ok, anyway, tell us about the cunningham speech <kim_bruning> If you say so <kim_bruning> okay well ward cunningham invented wikis <kim_bruning> he sort of had been thinking of doing stuff a lot <kim_bruning> and at one point he sort of hotwired a [[hypercard]] stack <kim_bruning> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercard <Cllewr> he created this? <kim_bruning> with hypercard you could make cards (pages) and you could link them by dragging with the mouse <kim_bruning> no, hypercard is an apple application <Cllewr> oh i see <Cllewr> it started with hypercard? <kim_bruning> you build hypercard "stacks" --> MrMiscellanious (N=MrMiscel@66-188-31-111.dhcp.bycy.mi.charter.com) has joined #wikinews <kim_bruning> and he made a stack in such a way, that you could add words to one side <Cllewr> omg i remember hypercard <kim_bruning> which you could search for <kim_bruning> and he expanded that so you could add keywords, and if they weren't there yet, it'd create a card for that keyword <Natterer> MrMisc! <Cllewr> interesting <kim_bruning> now this got unhandy after a while, so at some point he actually wrote a dedicated program <kim_bruning> that was the wiki <kim_bruning> and we all know what that is, so I'll skip right up to future :-) <MrMiscellanious> Natterer! <kim_bruning> INTERVIEW HERE! <kim_bruning> ;-) <kim_bruning> please help grill me at the spit! <kim_bruning> or something <Natterer> Who are you interviewing? <Wikinewsie193> Where can we find the list of the Wikimania winners from the Sunday announcement? <kim_bruning> for some reason Cllewr is interviewing me <kim_bruning> ask on #wikimania? <MrMiscellanious> :) <MrMiscellanious> I guess I'll go to wikinews-en then to chat :P <Wikinewsie193> Kim: Stop being sensible! <Wikinewsie193> ;-) <kim_bruning> LOL <Cllewr> b/c you were at wikimania kim! <kim_bruning> Wikinewsie193, who are you? :-) <kim_bruning> Wikinewsie193, ;-) --> jbn-o (N=jbn@12-221-85-167.client.insightBB.com) has joined #wikinews <Wikinewsie193> OOp! I am davodd. <Wikinewsie193> BRB <-- Wikinewsie193 has quit (Remote closed the connection) <kim_bruning> Ah ok --> Davodd_AtWork (N=45e4fab2@rdns.151.240.218.216.fre.communitycolo.net) has joined #wikinews <Natterer> Davodd! <marc7> w193: don't bother brb'ing, just /nick... oh too late <Cllewr> don't worry kim, we'll finish soon <kim_bruning> Ok <kim_bruning> FUTURE <Cllewr> what did cunningham say about the future of wikis? <kim_bruning> that's where we were <Cllewr> you got it <kim_bruning> Ok <-- marc7 has quit (Remote closed the connection) <kim_bruning> well, people keep writing wiki software for one computer <Davodd_AtWork> I am not used to this IRC java program -- (Miss trillian) <kim_bruning> and people keep doing distributed computing <kim_bruning> in a way that they try to make a distributed machine behave like a single machine <kim_bruning> that's a bit silly <CraigSpurrier_aw> if you are on the real time chat one it is cgi not java :) <kim_bruning> how about playing to the strengths of a distributed system? <kim_bruning> so he envisions objects (maybe in the case of a wiki , wiki pages) <Cllewr> i'm not sure what this means ;) <Cllewr> oh, sorry, continue <kim_bruning> sort of being kept distributed over several computers <kim_bruning> they sort of drift back and fro <kim_bruning> and keep a history of where they've been <kim_bruning> and each computer automatically keeps only links to those objects that are on that machine <Cllewr> impact of such a concept? <kim_bruning> so say you have a wiki, then a lot of pages would show up as red links, and only a few as blue <Cllewr> right <kim_bruning> well, GerardM seemed pleased, he figured it would be the most useful method to distribute wikipedia and other wikimedia projects to africa for instance <kim_bruning> the idea is that it should be acceptable to have only partial data <-- MrMiscellanious has quit ("Client Exiting") <kim_bruning> and to be able to deal with it <Davodd_AtWork> (Sounds like Google Desktop) <kim_bruning> so for instance if you're in africa with no fixed network line <Cllewr> but what are the benefits of this? <kim_bruning> you can still use wikipedia <Cllewr> ohhhh <Cllewr> right <Cllewr> good <kim_bruning> because like folks would put a thunb in one machine <kim_bruning> take it with them to another <kim_bruning> and that way some of the pages and page changes from the one would propagate to the other <kim_bruning> for instance <Davodd_AtWork> (Sounds like the MSFT Passport idea) <kim_bruning> Davodd_AtWork, ms passport needs permanent connection IIRC <kim_bruning> could be wrong <kim_bruning> sounds like a lot o different plans <kim_bruning> You might find a paper on this at the wikimania website, I do not know <kim_bruning> Ok <kim_bruning> so that's his ideas for future <Cllewr> cool <kim_bruning> to make wikis more scalable <kim_bruning> and to make them usable in wierd places <kim_bruning> Ok <kim_bruning> okay, what's up next? <Cllewr> was wikimania a success in the eyes of the wikimedia user? what impacts might it have had on wikimedia? and, are there any plans for a future wikimania yet? <kim_bruning> yes it was quite successful and fun according to all the wikimedians I met <kim_bruning> Now a lot of folks have met each other in person so all kinds of tensions may have ebbed away <kim_bruning> I know that talks (heh, DANCING! ;-) ) between dutch wikipedia and kennisnet cleared a lot of bad air <Cllewr> what is kennisnet <kim_bruning> cleared up a lot of *internal* issues on the dutch wikipedia <kim_bruning> kennisnet is the first external hosting provider <kim_bruning> even before yahoo <kim_bruning> they provide us with servers in amsterdam <kim_bruning> interview mark- for details <Cllewr> i see <kim_bruning> and we have several kennisnetters assigned to us who might be interviewable <Cllewr> that would be cool <kim_bruning> :-) <kim_bruning> okay <kim_bruning> ask mark- tomorrow when he's awake and take it from there <kim_bruning> mark- and kennis net are in UTC +0200 timezone <kim_bruning> kennisnet too <kim_bruning> one moment more... <Cllewr> impacts on wikimedia? <kim_bruning> we get servers <kim_bruning> money <kim_bruning> etc <kim_bruning> from kennisnet <kim_bruning> they pay for and operate a serverpark in amsterdam <kim_bruning> http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Kennisnet <Cllewr> http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/%2425000_Summer_Sizzler_-_Kart_Race_Las_Vegas <-- ?? <Cllewr> that's completely unrelated, btw <kim_bruning> Cllewr, eh? <Cllewr> okay, so, what are the possible impacts of wikimania on wikimedia? <kim_bruning> Um, that's a big question <kim_bruning> well people have met each other <Cllewr> you don't have to answer it <kim_bruning> developers have worked on software <kim_bruning> small conflicts that happen online have been solved <kim_bruning> wikimania is now very clearly on the press-map <Cllewr> finally - future plans for another wikimania? is this going to be an annual thing, or what? <Cllewr> or is nothing known? <jeff> /names <jeff> bah, lag. --- Amgine_ is now known as Amgine <Pechorin> re Amgine <Amgine> <good timezones the whole channel> <Natterer> Amgine! <Cllewr> hellooo kim?
