Talk:Indonesian human-to-human bird flu infection may be false alarm

Latest comment: 17 years ago by Frankie Roberto in topic misleading title

Please give source for this quote: "Indonesia's health ministry believes the cases are also a result of human to human transmission"

Please give source for this quote: "but officials say that her condition is stable and that her case may be the result of human to human transmission."

Thank you.

Well these are not quotes for one. But stable is a decent term IMO given she is not dead and they never said she is dying. They make the suggestion and the suspicion and are worried that it is human to human transmission.
  • When she arrived at this hospital last night, her body temperature was very high, namely 39.6 Celsius degrees but now it has decreased to 37 Celsius degrees. After considering her contact with dead bird flu victims, we declared her a suspected bird flu case. But she is still fully conscious, her breathing problems are not too serious and she's not experiencing chest pain," added Yusuf.
  • We could not confirm whether she is positive of having been infected by avian influenza virus or not, although she had earlier have contacts with siblings, 18-year old Ad and 10-year old Ai, who died of bird flu virus recently

The quotes i have listed...most are from the Peoples Daily sources. Jason Safoutin 14:00, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think the article is very well-written, but these 2 line above take away from it...we can't know what the health ministry "believes" and apparently no official has "said" that her case may the result of H2H...Thanks for the article!
Well its Indonesia's official health ministry so its not just "some official." I also added another source: http://www.antara.co.id/en/seenws/?id=13714 Jason Safoutin 14:10, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for indulging me! I think the changes to the article are great...this is such an important subject and we really need good people like you to spread the word about this crisis!
No problem :) Thanks for pointing the stuff out :) Happy reading/editing :) Jason Safoutin 14:19, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fact-gathering edit

This is an important story, so we should try to understand it and make sense of it as best as possible. From my reading of the sources, human to human bird flu transmission is NOT suspected in the case of the two children, but IS suspected in the case of the Nurse, who had close contact with the children. In which case the article as it stands is misleading. Am I understanding correctly, or am I missing something? Frankie Roberto 14:46, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Here's a summary of the facts gleaned from the sources. IMO, we should have at least two sources for each, before publishing. Please feel free to edit these as more sources confirm the information, and work the article on the basis of these...

  • Two children (siblings) have died in Indonesia, a seven year-old girl and a nine [or ten] year old boy.[1][2]
  • The seven year old girl died of bird flu, as confirmed by local lab test.[3][4]
  • The nine/ten year old boy had similar symptoms to his sister, but was buried before any tests could be taken.[5]
  • The two siblings lived near a poultry slaughter house [6]
  • The girl had been in contact with sick poultry - Nyoman Kandun, a senior Health Ministry official. [7]
  • Two siblings, 18-year old Ad and 10-year old Ai, have died of bird flu. [8][9]
  • A nurse, 25, identified as 'Ci', who treated bird-flu patients has been admitted to hospital after showing bid-flu like symptoms. [10][11]
  • Hadi Jusuf - head of bird flu treatment at hospital, has suggested that human-to-human transmission of the virus to the nurse will be suspected if she has the virus. [12][13]
  • The virus has not mutated [14] [15]
  • WHO confirms no evidence of human to human transmission. [16]

Notes edit

Are there two sets of children, the seven and nine year olds and the ten and eighteen year olds, or is this just a contradiction over their ages? Frankie Roberto 14:56, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well the WHO is wrong ;) as this would be the second cluster. Seven of Eight members of a family died of human to human transmission (Human to human transmission of the H5N1 Avian Flu may have infected seven Indonesian family members). The ages are conflicting reports. I saw the same thing but put the first ages I saw. The virus HAS mutated...in Turkey (Turkish teens died of mutated strain of bird flu)...well only in two teens. But has not yet turned up again. You are right on the other parts though...but somehow, I don't see how this would be the first case of h2h and how the WHO says there has been none...h2h in a family...but not as a pandemic. Promotion edit

I've promoted this over on Wikipedia: Transmission and infection of H5N1 and have asked for help in editing and following this story. Frankie Roberto 14:54, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

misleading title edit

The title does not reflect the facts in the article. Acording to the article, tests revealed that the nurse likely did not even get infected with bird flu. --vonbergm 17:45, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

The title reflects the original story, which has changed over time.... Frankie Roberto 22:07, 4 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
