boy in 1970s did it first and developed full symptoms

Well maybe not.....exactly

I recollect UK TV documentary in the very early 70s regarding a young boy in Southern USA whose screaming woke his parents one night for thwem to discover he had been bitten by a bat. They recovered the bat and sought medical treatment.

This boy as I remember had a syringe inserted into his head and received extensive medication, but essentially he had been bitten by a wild rabid animal (not previously innoculated) and he did develop full symptoms but recovered.

The documentary was called <His name> is alive and well

Does anyone know the story - is the guy still around? --Ridge 22:04, 10 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually, according to this article there was a case like this, but the patient was vaccinated against rabies. -- IlyaHaykinson 03:07, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Other patients treated similarly died

According to the Wikipedia Rabies article, other patients who had started to show symptoms of rabies, and who had been subjected to the same treatment, died. --198.54.202.254 07:31, 28 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I also remember reading an article about a boy, or a man, in the USA, who was infected with rabies and fully recovered despite not being vaccinated. He was treated in hospital for several days and it was touch and go for a while but he eventually recovered. I think the article may have been in a Reader's Digest magazine about thirty years ago. Sorry I can't be more accurate but it definately happened so the girl in 2004 could not be the first! Posted 13/3/2007

Six survivors

edit

The article currently says: "Jeanna's is the sixth case of human recovery from a rabies infection, but the other five people were vaccinated against rabies either before infection, or before the symptoms appeared."

There must be more than six survivors in total since Louis Pasteur's work which lead to the survival of Joseph Meister. --Philip Baird Shearer (talk) 11:36, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
