I emailed the British Transport Police; they sent me the following statement:

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are currently on scene investigating the death of a 43-year-old woman on board a train near Leighton Buzzard Rail Station in Bedfordshire.

A fire was reported inside a toilet cubicle on the train at 5.07pm. The deceased woman has injuries consistent with burns.

No other person is believed to have been involved in the incident and it is not being treated as an accident.

Officers from the Ambulance and Fire services also attended. The train involved was a London Midland service from Northampton to Euston.

Officers are currently making arrangements for the train to be moved to sidings where forensic analysis will continue. There will be no further updates this evening.

London Midland

I emailed London Midland; they sent me the following statement:

London Midland services are resuming (7.30pm) after an incident earlier this evening prevented trains running on the West Coast Mainline.

A passenger reported a fire in a toilet on the 16.25 London Midland Northampton to Euston service as the four-carriage train approached Leighton Buzzard.

Passengers were evacuated from the train at Leighton Buzzard and fire crews and British Transport Police officers attended the incident.

British Transport Police have confirmed they are investigating the death of a 43-year-old woman.

No other person was involved in the incident and it is not being treated as an accident by the BTP.

We apologise to those passengers disrupted by this tragic incident. London Midland tickets were accepted by other operators and buses used as rail replacement services. We are worknig hard to restore our services.
