I am the contact for a grassroots group called “Alaska Women Reject Palin” who challenge the claim that Palin’s value systems and ideals reflect all women and middle-class American families, and who urge voters to scrutinize Palin’s politics, and decide for themselves if hers is the example by which they and their families want to live. We are hosting a “Reject Palin” rally to put the media and both campaigns on notice that Alaska’s women (all women for that matter) are a diverse and intelligent group that will be voting in November on substance not on gender or stereotype, no matter how fascinating. The non-partisan Alaska Women Reject Palin rally is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2008, at noon (Alaska time) on the Loussac Library lawn at 36th and Denali in Anchorage. We invite other women’s groups across the nation to join us in their home towns at noon Alaska time on Saturday September 13 in letting McCain and Palin know that Sarah Palin does not speak for us.

At issue are Palin’s stances on many issues that we feel will be a setback for the very people she is purported to represent. Palin opposed or has failed to show support for many issues that are important to most women and families. She opposes women’s right to reproductive choice. She believes public schools should teach creationism and supports abstinence-only sex education. She has now aligned herself with McCain who has voted to increase abstinence-only funding, voted to terminate the federal family planning program and voted against funding teen pregnancy prevention programs. She is skeptical of climate change and opposes listing the polar bear as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, misrepresenting the findings of the State of Alaska’s own leading marine mammal biologists. She considers the war in Iraq a “task from God”. In Alaska , Palin cut funding for special needs children by 62% yet claims to be a special needs advocate. As Mayor of Wasilla, Palin required victims of sexual assault to pay for their own rape kits, a decision that ran contrary to that of then Governor Tony Knowles, other communities in Alaska , and existing legislation. As Governor, she pushed to allow citizens to shoot wolves from the air and supported looser bear hunting regulations that authorized killing black bear females with cubs, both aimed to inflate moose and caribou numbers which draw big game hunters to the state, and both misguided and proven not to work wildlife management techniques. She used $400,000 of taxpayer money to educate Alaskans about predator control. Her administration offered $150 per killed wolf, a policy ruled to be an illegal bounty by Alaska courts. Palin has aligned herself with a candidate who voted against the family and medical leave act, making it harder for women and men to take time from work to care for loved ones, and who opposed spending to prevent unintended and teen pregnancies, and she has gone on record supporting McCain’s opposition of legislation for equal pay for women.

We are non-partisan, and although we are largely focusing on women’s and family issues, we claim average Alaskan women and men among our supporters.
