Talk:Chinese version of Wikinews gets blocked in China

Help

edit

We have almost nothing to go on except a few tweets from twitter, and the foundation-l mailing list entry. I have contacted another person in China to help, but I don't know that he can. Since there is little info to go on, I request anyone who can, to help with this article. Please do not tag it as it is a developing story.

I tried using a Fire Fox add-on tool called China Channel (http://chinachannel.hk/) which gives you a proxy through Fire Fox to allegedly surf the web as if you were in China. Either I am doing something wrong, or it does not work, or the internet connections in China are that bad. Either way I can sometimes connect to the Google homepage and sometimes cannot. So anyone who might know this tool better than I might want to give it a shot. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 00:34, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

This tool seems to confirm that http://zh.wikinews.org is being blocked in China with enwikinews not effected. Adambro (talk) 01:00, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't know for certain, but User:David Vasquez ( a former contributor) may or may not have moved to china (I have vague memories of him being in china). You could try emailing him to see if he knows anything (at the risk of sounding slightly foolish, as its quite likely he lives in US). Bawolff 01:06, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks guys. This was a big help. Bawolff: unfortunately either David does not check his e-mail anymore or he just does not check his Wikinews mail. I have contacted him in the past about WN Video with no success. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 01:18, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks to Adambro's help, here is the result he is speaking of: http://www.websitepulse.com/tests/34473e3084101dff.html . I believe this result will be saved for no more than 90 days, so check now :-P DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 01:20, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can confirm that as of the time of this signature, the above link yields a "empty response from server" as a result of the query testing zh.wikinews.org. I cannot attest to the reliability of websitepulse.com. --SVTCobra 03:24, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
If I recall, though I am not 100%, the same tool was used in previous articles related to the same issue. I could be wrong though. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 03:47, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Special:LinkSearch/*.websitepulse.com might shed some light on that question :) Mike.lifeguard | @meta 02:02, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have e-mailed the Chinese government (from here: http://english.gov.cn/). Doubt I will get a response, but its worth a try. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 06:15, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia blocks in 2008?

edit

The sighted version said,

The Chinese version of Wikipedia was then blocked once again after the games had ended.

I can't find mention of this in the sources or the OR notes (perhaps I missed it.) User Gzdavidwong has removed this twice without explanation. saying "Wikipedia is not blocked in China." An unregistered user earlier deleted it with the comment "The Chinese version of Wikipedia may have beeen re-blocked, but definitely not the English one (I was in Beijing thru Dec. '08)" It was restored each time once without explanation.

Could someone explain what evidence that statement is based on? Until then I have sighted Gzdavidwong's version.

I have amended my above comment, as I misread the history. --InfantGorilla (talk) 08:58, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

WP may not be blocked now, but at the time of the Olympics report, it was. DragonFire1024 (Talk to the Dragon) 23:40, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
But was it blocked again after the games? As far as I know it was unblocked during the press week before the games (July 31 Wikinews story, and without reports otherwise, I assume it remained unblocked.) --InfantGorilla (talk) 09:19, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
