Russian government never announced that Maskhadov was killed by Russian Special focres. It was reported by the Russian officials that Maskhadov had been killed by an accidental shot of Maskadov's own bodyguard. It was announced that the aim of the operation was to take Maskhadov alive.

One should more be careful with the sources.
