  • I understand PattmanSport is, in effect, the on-wiki author (RockerballAustralia). This should be disclosed here on the talk page. (I observe funding of PattmanSport through Patreon; no clue whether that needs disclosure, but, it's now been mentioned here anyway. The WMF is funded through donations too, after all.)
  • Although I'm inclined to accept the sourcing here, I've reached that conclusion after carefully considering the propriety of sources whose author is author of the Wikinews article.
  • Yes, they are synthesis sources rather than OR, since they've clearly been published on another news site.
  • This case differs from the general case of synthesis sources authored by the on-wiki author. We do not allow that general case; here's why: Ordinarily for a synthesis source, we do not know what resources its author drew on for the source article, and we assess the trust-worthiness of what they report without knowing that. However, we expect to know just how the on-wiki author got their information. So if a cited source, written by the on-wiki author, makes some claim of fact, it's just as if the claim were made on-wiki without saying where it came from.
  • Here, though, the cited sources by the on-wiki author are video interviews. By an accredited Wikinews reporter, no less. There's modestly less contextual information provided about these interviews than would be expected for Wikinews OR, but still the origin is pretty obvious, and trust-worthiness is reasonably established. So I lean toward allowing this, where I would not allow the more general case of synthesis-sourcing by the on-wiki author.

@RockerballAustralia: On exactly which day of the weekend did this take place? The first source just says it was on the weekend; and the interviews were evidently posted on Sunday but that doesn't guarantee anything. --Pi zero (talk) 13:50, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Game and interviews were Saturday per the fixtureRockerballAustralia contribs 17:47, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Whether or not the video is uploaded to YouTube, Commons, or sent to Scoop, I don't think it changes the fact that this is WN:OR. I am assuming the author conducted the video interviews. Cheers, --SVTCobra 19:49, 17 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

I'll try to remember to discuss that in my review comments. All review actions create precedents; Wikinews review should not be adversarial (someday maybe I should write an essay about that), and we shouldn't pounce on outlying permissive precedents to carry us in problematic directions, but it's also helpful if, when we're creating these precedents, we think things out and comment on what we're doing in order to help guide possible consequences going forward. --Pi zero (talk) 14:52, 18 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@RockerballAustralia: To clarify (as I feel I may have been somewhat remiss in asking some background questions here, after all): What were the circumstances of these interviews? Is that you speaking? Operating the camera? Whose equipment is it (do I see WIN on the microphone?), and on whose behalf? --Pi zero (talk) 23:59, 18 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Both interviews are post match press conferences with both myself and Win present. The videos I posted were through my camera, microphone, and operation on my own behalf. Win had their gear and people their too.
The person asking the questions was one of the people from Win. I should note it’s normal – here in the Sunshine Coast at least – for one person – whether me or from one of the TV stations – to ask the questions then check with the others to see if they’ve got any questions they want to ask. An example may have come through at the end of at least one of the videos. --RockerballAustralia contribs 00:32, 19 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
@RockerballAustralia: Do you think we should move the article to Original Reporting since you did so much of the ground work? You were there, you took the photo (and more on Commons), you recorded the videos documenting the quotes from player/coaches. I think it would give you more credit. Cheers, --SVTCobra 00:48, 19 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Oh, and is the caption for the photo OK? It looks like a "line out" but I don't know rugby. Cheers, --SVTCobra 01:10, 19 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
The caption is fine. I would lean towards not moving it to Original Reporting as there is no noting taking to help verify the article. --RockerballAustralia contribs 02:14, 20 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
