Talk:Australia unemployment at 30-year low, but under-employed also at 5.1%

Under-employment rate calculation edit

The under-employment rate was determined using figures from the ABS from March. The unemployment rate in March is given as 5.1% - the same as the figure mentioned in the newspaper reports.

The 5.1% matches

Unemployed persons * 100% / (Unemployed persons + Employed persons)

that is

531,600 * 100% / (531,600 + 9,900,600) = 5.1%

Therefore, the corresponding calculation for underemployed persons is Under-employed persons * 100 / (Unemployed persons + Employed persons)

600,000 * 100% / (531,600 + 9,900,600) = 5.075%

Both results once rounded off to a single decimal place are 5.1%.

Long-term unemployed percentage calculation edit

The percentage of long term unemployed was calculated from figures in Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. "Labour Market and Related Payments: a monthly profile: February 2005" — Australian Government, February 2005.

The appropriate figures are

Long-term NSA Customers: February: Persons: Received a payment = 288,965 All NSA Customers: February: Persons: Received a payment = 482,974

Long-term * 100% / All = 288,965 * 100% / 482,974 = 59.83% or 'roughly 60%' as used in the text.

Long term vs short term ratio edit

Using figures mentioned on page 2 or page 6 of the Labour Market and Related Payments report,

Long-term jobseekers decreased by 11.2% from 272,224 (in Feb 2004) to 241,737 (in Feb 2005). Short-term jobseekers decreased by 4.8% from 189,985 (in Feb 2004) to 180,830 (in Feb 2005).

Ratio of long-termers for every short-termer

Long-term / Short-term

so

Feb 2004: 272,224 / 189,985 = 1.43 Feb 2005: 241,737 / 180,830 = 1.34

Ten years ago edit

February 1994 figures at the top of page 3 of the Labour Market and Related Payments report,

Long-term: 472,785 Total: 977,796 Short term, by subtraction: 505,011 So ratio, this time, short-term over long-term: 505,011 / 472,785 = 1.07

WRONG WRONG WRONG edit

This unemployment rate is a scam. The bureau of statistics is paid to make up bogus tests and questionaires. The actual uncovered unenployment rate in Ausrtalia is 10.1% That means out of a group of 10 people 1 will be unenployed and be living underneath the poverty line. If You Would like to e-mail me on this information its 13891R@student.bbc.qld.edu.au Yes and even though i am a student it does not change the fact that my source is correct and that the figure 5.1% is a lie.
