"defend" is a term of judgement, and wikinews shldn't be using it unless of course, the C & G actually said so in so many words that they "defend bush" or his program. in the case of clinton, what he says about spending has been true for a long time, i think, and not specialy applicable to the bush program. and it is expressing an opinion to sum C's criticism and praise and make it come out as "defend". Maggie Fox is free to do it, perhaps, but not we.

It would also be helpful to contrast the two opinions with that of othe r delegates in the conference who say what they think is right or wrong about the Bush program. for instance, activists have been contending that while US spending is much higher than that of others, as a proportion of it "wealth", its still small & that compared to what they think is needed to fight the crisis effectively, it's still small & so on. Doldrums

I disagree, there is no value judgement. From Websters: "to maintain or support in the face of argument or hostile criticism". Clinton's comments did in fact support the program in an environment where the US program is facing criticism, such as that you mention.
I don't think it is possible to adequately sum up the opinions of all other delegates here. They represent most of the world and are sure to have varying opinions. Or do you propose it is the world vs. US?
The real news here is that they defended (even with some criticisms) the program. I think that many observers had expected them both to be very critical of the program.
Yes, it would be nice to have a summary of "per capita AIDS spending" and "AIDS spending to GDP ratios".
Anyway, I am very busy today - I will expand later. --SVTCobra 17:08, 16 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I have been visiting sites like PEPFAR Watch and the like and been looking for a reasonable comparitive study on U.S. versus pretty-much-anyone-else in regards to AIDS treatment/prevention spending. I have found none yet but I found this critique at Avert. Maybe I am not searching the right key words but everything I come up with is about the strings-attached and abstinence-only issues with the PEPFAR program. --SVTCobra 01:21, 17 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
