On April 17, a cable car crash occurred in southern Italy at Mount Faito, south of the city of Naples, resulting in the deaths of four tourists. One person was said to have been "extremely seriously injured," and required airlifting to a hospital for treatment.

According to local media sources, the car was near the top of a mountain when one of its support cables gave out and snapped. Another car was present on the line during the incident, though all of its occupants were successfully rescued. Suboptimal weather conditions such as fog, wind and rain impeded rescue efforts, as occupants evacuated the car one by one through the aid of harnesses.

The system was first opened in 1952, called Funivia del Faito, it is a type known as an Aerial tramway, starting in the city of Castellammare di Stabbia it follows a 3km route whilst ascenting 1km to the mountain top.

EAV the public transport firm, that owns and runs of the service, called the incident a "tragedy."
