On May 1, 2025, Maldives police arrested Aishath Shiman Ahmed and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, two organizers of the youth-led Dhuleh Nukuraanan protests.
The police crackdown came around 11pm when officers tried to stop protesters from playing games and later manhandled and pepper sprayed protesters before seizing speakers and megaphones. Police dragged Shiman and Mahzoom into the police building, where they were remanded for three days. They were released on May 4.
These arrests were condemned by the Maldivian Democratic Party.
Dhuleh Nukuraanan are series of ongoing youth-led nightly protests that started on April 24 to demand justice of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed who mysteriously fell off a building on April 18.
